On Winthrop's board, one of their fans said something that I didn't think was true, so I went looking to prove him wrong statistically. Instead of rewriting my entire post, I'm just going to post it here. Some of the stats surprised me a little bit.

Liberty is playing for all intents and purposes a five guard line up, so I look for us to score easily in the paint
That's what everyone that has played us this season has said. We have given up 28.2 points in the paint to Division I opponents. By comparison, our five guard lineup has averaged 26.4 points in the paint. We've outscored our opponents in the paint in four of the ten games.

Against Division I opponents, we have shot 20.4 free throws per game. In comparison, our opponents have only shot 14.5 per game. We have shot more free throws than our opponents in 8 of the 10 games.

We're getting out rebounded by nearly nine rebounds a game, however we're only getting out scored on second chance points by less than a point (9.4 - 10.3).

You can look at our small lineup and fall in line with the general thinking that we're getting killed underneath and that good stuff but when you look at the stats, we're definitely holding our own under there.

Yeah it's very misleading what people think of 'small ball' --- (LU & VMI) -- they shoot free throws and score in the paint cause the 'bigger teams' can't defend the five guards. you don't have to outrebound abn opponet to win as long you force the other team to turn the ball over more.

Big doesn't win, quickness and shooting win!

Not just in the Big South. The difference in the power conferences is that you have some athletes who are quick, can shoot, and are big too. See North Carolina. If you are just big, you lose.

yes I agree. I was just saying that in the Big South you can be small and athletic as crap and be successful, but in the NCAA tourney you have to have some height to win. Now we are not THAT short this year, so I'm not writing us off, but we really need Austin or Tyler to step up and be a solid post presence on defense if we want to be successful overall in the NCAA...

Lets just get to the NCAA first, then worry about making it past the first round. The first step to the NCAAs: Winning the Big South.
