Ok. I thought he had to sit out and lost a year of eligibility when he transferred.

Stress reactions with the Men's team and knee strains with the women? What is up with the floor? Did it flood again and leave rumble bumps?

Yeah, he was a freshman, and he's redshirting right now, he will be a R-Soph. next year.

For all its faults...we did not have those issues with the Justice Center, did we kingaling? That floor has held up pretty well.

Who knows why the injuries are creeping up? It could just be "one of those years." Here's to praying for a healthier '09!

All they can do is patch them up and carry them to the doctor.

One of 3 probables based on the types of injuries you're describing
1. Over-training & breaking their bodies down too much (i.e. Tyler Hansborough)
2. The athletes didn't do much if anything significant over the summer prior to starting conditioning & more rigorous practices (our VB team used to be notorious for this!)
3. Your coaches implemented the wrong conditioning programs considering the prior conditioning of the athletes (combo of 1 & 2 above)

At least that's been my experience with chronic & nagging injuries to the feet, shins, leg.. I'm no athletic trainer...

In all seriousness it's probably not your floor!! I'm sure your hard court has plenty of "give" in it- if not it's like playing outdoors on concrete which can certainly irritate lots of lower leg conditions..

Hansbrough actually got hurt because of the floor he was practicing on, not over working himself.

Sure about that?? Let's just say that Roy Williams is from Asheville & through some reliable people I probably have a little more insight on this one.. But for general sources (granted these are online sources, but they get it right at times too!) this sums up what I heard as well..

"To put it simply, the stress reaction in Hansbrough’s right shin is essentially an overuse injury. His shin is sore and if he isn’t careful, the pain could develop into a stress fracture. That’s the Cliff’s Notes version.

The tricky part now for the Carolina doctors and coaches is knowing when to give Hansbrough clearance to return to practice. Return too soon and the injury could become aggravated, a stress fracture could materialize and suddenly the timetable for Hansbrough’s return would become significantly lengthier." source http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/messages/chrono/11678786

or

"According to ESPN medical analysist Dr. Michael Kaplan, the MRI likely showed increased uptake in tibia (leg bone) suggesting a stress reaction. An overload or overuse type phenomenon occurs with inflammation and, ultimately, fatigue failure with stress fracture. This is a precursor condition to stress fracture. A period of rest is mandatory for tissues to quiet down or worsening injury will result." source http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3674076

But hey SJ you post a ton on here & know better I guess..

"Tyler's shin splints are CURED! YEAH!!! It was Carmicheal Auditorium's fault. Relocating Women's BB and Volleyball to The Legend's Lair while Carmicheal is being renovated meant Tyler moved his Iron Man pre-season workouts to the subterranean practice court beneath the Natatorium .... which does NOT have a spring-loaded floor like the main Dean Dome floor. Pounding on the hardwood over concrete created the shin splints. Altering Tyler's workouts on the concrete floor solved the dilemma. BIG HUZZAS to the UNC Sports Medicine Dept for diagnosing the problem and solving it. Disproving the UNC faculty's theory that "there is no god!". A grateful TarHeelNation knows otherwise."

Granted, it's a blog but the guys at IC think it's legit given the circumstances.

Over use may have been part of it, but the floor had a lot to do with it as well.

I don't deny that improper flooring can cause some injuries (I mentioned that earlier)- not denying that at all.. HOWEVER- there are warning signs that your body is going to give you and that feedback tends to indicate that it isn't good- most people stop working out, rest, try something else etc.. TH isn't exactly the type of person to rest- they call him 'Psycho T' for a reason- it's not because he takes it easy...

I probably should've said, "TH got hurt mainly because of the floor, not because of over working himself." That would've been a better way to say it. Had he been practicing on the regular floor, the stuff wouldn't have started flaring up. They didn't get better because he overworked himself after they flared up.

Well, they are still using that terminology on libertyflames.com
Liberty sophomore Jeremy Anderson and freshman Carter McMasters will apply for medical hardship redshirts for the 2008-09 men’s basketball season, announced head coach Ritchie McKay.

Yea, sorry, should have clarified. The term and hardship idea still apply. I was trying to get at the fact that now it is extremely, extremely difficult, if possible, to get a redshirt and then get a medical hardship as well. It is generally either a redshirt by coach/player choice or a hardship. Glad you pointed out my mistake Cider. Sorry for the confusion. Would have really liked to have had both these guys shooting ability off the bench and Carter, although he may not be a force down low on offense can play some D in the middle. Seem to be good kids too, here's to a full recovery for both.
