Now that LU has a rink, they should definately try to host a tournament sometime next year, like IUP and some of the other schools do.
It would be ultra cool to see hockey all day!!

Having our own ice opens up a slew of possibilities. I would think a tourney would certainly be attractive to some northern schools looking for some warmer weather in the dead of winter (which begins much earlier up there).

Just thought I'd throw this in here, they're starting an adult league in the rink. That should help bring in some money for the school.

I think a tourney inviting all the club collegiate hockey teams from VA would be great...us, VaTech, VMI, Radford, UVA, and W&M would be an awesome tourney b/c:
1. We'll win
2. The local UVa and VT fans (99.9% of Lynchburg) would be extremely interested in seeing those schools play in Lynchburg
3. We'd be able to claim the mythical Big South Ice Hockey championship

You may be on to something there. Considering that we already play most of these schools I don't think scheduling it would be an issue. And those schools would probably enjoy not having to pay for ice time.
Then again, I'd love to see some big name schools from up north come down looking for some warmer weather during one of their breaks from school.

While the idea of playing Va. schools could be good for the gate, there is no way that the team will play Radford or VMI, which are ACHA Division 3. With the team going up to to ACHA D1 next year, which has a different ranking system as well as being the new kid on the block, they can't put teams that are two divisions below them on their schedule, even if they win 25-0.

While that makes sense, perhaps the tourney could be at the start of the season and we could schedule those two as exhibitions before playing everyone else. Just a thought. Or you could have those schools play the other DII schools and not play us while being part of the event. Just a few ideas (perhaps bad).

W&M is also ACHA D3 as well...so yeah, would we be allowed to have 3 exhibitions?

You can have as many as you want to have, there are no limitations on those things at the club level

That makes me laugh. Does their giant circus tent turn into a rink? Maybe they just freeze over the pool in there.

Is Radford in a lower Division - Why don't we play some of the same schools?

VMI has a Hockey Team? Wow - the things you learn on this site

They don't really want to be playing radford and VMI...I believe there in a lower division...
LU would crush them so bad...no worth playing those games, they don't help us,
Especially if were trying to step up to 1A in the near future.
LU doesn't need local teams to play them in hockey, they have no trouble selling tickets,
bring in the toughest games that can be scheduled.

I agree Jim. Wasn't coming from the needing to sell tickets angle - just would be fun to beat up on the Richmond's, Old Dominion's, Appalachian State's of the World.
On the ticket side - let's keep the spirit up. Let's not let Kirk do all this work, LU make the investment on bletchers - then all of the sudden the students get complacent and stop showing up. Don't say it can't happen - students used to live for Basketball games too:)

to answer the questions, those teams are ACHA Div 3, one step below us- we are a Div 2 club. for lists of all the teams follow the ACHA link on the links thread.

Not to complain...but LU needs to make a BETTER investement on bleachers. Those bleachers on the side opposite the benches are a joke! I am happy that they at least have SOME bleachers as opposed to nothing, but They're metal, they're freezing on the butt, and they don't make good use of space - they look like something you would see at Peaksview park.
Didn't they save any of the old bleachers from the Schilling? they could put one back of those on the side opposite the benches on the first level, if they'd just extend the netting to protect the spectators.
They could put a lot more seating in there, with a lot better viewing angles, but they need to extend the netting the whole way around as well. The extra seats would pay for themselves.
The only seats behind the goal on the top are metal chairs. They could have another section of small wooden bleachers up there as well, and still have plenty of room behind that for a pro-shop, etc.

Whoops...just read on the other thread that they got the approval for 3,000 seats.
That will be awesome and make me happy. Sorry for the impatience.

They've actually taken out the bleachers on the side across from the benches.
As for bleachers up top behind the goal, I don't want them there. That's quickly becoming one of the places for students to heckle the other team (along with the small upper section behind the goal on the other end). The only time people sit down is at intermission because we have no intermission entertainment whatsoever. I'm perfectly fine with bleachers everywhere else but I think there should be a standing room section up top in that one spot.

Your right metal bletchers are the greatest. They were on loan from the swimmnig area. There are no longer bletchers in Shilling - those were sold/donated to Temple Baptist years ago.
