When Josh Davidson stepped off the plane that had carried him to New York in 2009, he noticed an immediate difference.

It was cold. For the 9-year-old boy, that was a shocking contrast, especially since it was November, a month when temperatures in his home country of Ghana typically hovered around a humid 90 degrees.

He noticed other differences, too. In America, people often had too much food and threw away what they didn’t want.

That wasn’t the case when Davidson was a kid growing up in the northeastern section of Ghana, in the region of Bolgatanga.
