SARASOTA - Charles Ward recently burst back onto the track and field scene.

In his first high school meet, the Sarasota High junior leaped 7.13 meters or 23 feet, 4¾ inches in the long jump at the George Jenkins Invitational on Feb. 17 in Lakeland.

At the time, the distance was the best in the state this season and fourth in the country, according to athletic.net.

“When I was jumping, I heard a lot of people saying, ‘Ohhhhhh.’ Then I kind of seen I jumped further than the other athletes did,” Ward said. “I didn’t know I jumped that far.”
