Since posting HTML to the board has gone away (and likely is not coming back), I thought I'd see if there was at least a way to bring back one of my favorite features that HTML allowed: YouTube vids.

When writing a new post or reply, you should now notice a "youtube" button in the upper-right corner of the writing area. It looks like this:

Image

Clicking that button will insert the custom youtube BBCode tags that look like this:
Code: Select all
[youtube][/youtube]
To post a video, you'll simply paste the URL for that YouTube video in between the two tags, like this:
Code: Select all
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0[/youtube]
This should produce a nice happy embedded video, like this:

[youtube]
[/youtube]

Enjoy, and let me know if you run into any problems using this feature.

I haven't tried it yet, but will the method work for hosts other than YouTube (i.e. Google, Tangle, Vimeo, etc.)?

No. Unfortunately it's YouTube-specific. I could make custom buttons for each service, but you can see the obvious limitations with that. Still, if there's demand for something, no reason we can't try.

No problem. Just thinking out loud. I appreciate the ability to post videos. We all know how much I love to work them into the football prospect profiles that myself and three other friends actually look at in the football forum.

Yeah, I figured YouTube was the big player in the game and therefore a must-have. I'm sure we'll ad more stuff in due time.

You were using the share link. Copy the URL from the address bar and paste it in your message. You need to take the "s" out of the https://.

I tried it first with the normal URL, but I didn't take out the "s":

[youtube]
[/youtube]

[youtube]
[/youtube]

[youtube]
[/youtube]

(Changed "m" to "www", removed "s" & "feature=youtu.be")

That is how it is done. When the feature was set up by El Scorcho, YouTube wasn't using https addresses as a default. Yeah, it was that long ago. Unfortunately the YouTube tool is not flexible at all. If you don't use it exactly the way it was set up, it will not work. If I had a dollar for every link I have fixed on here over the years, I'd be surviving these low oil & gas prices much better.

There is a new format now running... please see my test post

[.youtube]v2dx1i7Bn40[/youtube] is the new format.

So why didn't my post work? (I have added the period before "youtube" so my syntax can be read. It isn't in my other post.)

Ok ever since Bradley/Chelsea Manning took over from his Faraday enhanced bunker the YouTube videos won’t post. What the heck?

New way:

1. Click the share button on the YouTube video
2. Click "copy link"
3. Paste that link and use the YouTube button as you did before.

This will be much more user friendly in due time. BBcode is tricky because if the website change their syntax it screws everything up.

I'll post a more detailed post later. I'm recovering from chaperoning a 1st grade field trip for my daughters class. Cut me some slack PH.

You clicked the share button on your mobile device and copied that link? When you do that a link looking like this
will show up. It will have the youtu.be naming convention.

Put that in the fancy YouTube brackets and you're good to go.

I did this from my phone.
