Meyhonia Layne has had an emotional week.

In the span of seven days, the Eastern View High School senior track and field star — who goes by the nickname “Meme” — signed a scholarship to run at Liberty University, celebrated her 18th birthday and endured the shock of a lifetime.

She needs heart surgery.

While her legs have gained her notoriety in the track and field world, it’s her heart that has been her strongest muscle.

Her heart is what stood out to her adoptive parents, Michelle and Steve Layne, when they met Meme seven years ago at a foster home in Oklahoma.
