Senior high jumper and hurdler Matt Parker (Rome Free Academy) has gotten his final indoor track and field season at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., off to a flying start.

In last month’s season opener, Parker finished second in the heptathlon. He won the high jump at 6 feet, 11½ inches, the long jump at 22-5, and the 60-meter hurdles in 8.33 seconds. He was second in the 60-meter dash (7.27), third in the shot put (36-4½), and 1,000-meter run (2:50.04), and fourth in the pole vault (10-6).

At last weekend’s Liberty Open, Parker won the 60-meter hurdles in a personal best time of 8.09 seconds – good enough to qualify him for the IC4A Championships and just one-hundredth of a second off the school record – and finished second in the high jump at 6-11.
