Rupp is now separating from the pack in second but about 8-10 seconds behind Sam.

I'll feel better if he can put Rupp away...but Rupp is too strong for that.

Rupp is having to push it a little earlier than he wanted to.

They are running sound bite from Galen about Sam. He says whatever Sam does he'll be ready. He is confident in his kick.

a quarter of the way through the race Sam remains way out front but Galen is trying to reel him in as the rest of the field falls further back.

Rupp caught up as Sam appeared to let him catch him and then they sort of pushed on each other and Sammy then turned on the jets to pull away by about 20 yards.

Galen is trying to reel him back in and is about 10 yards behind.

Here's the thing: Galen is an aerobic powerhouse and is in much better shape than last year. He will probably close the gap on Sam (just did as I am typing this) but the advantage Sam can have when he catches he can pull away and put him back in oxygen debt.

Thanks, Josh. From the strategy standpoint that makes perfect sense.

Galen looks like he is laboring more than Sam as they run. Did Sam pushing it earlier take some of the wind out of Galen?

The question is does Sam have another gear left??? Did he expend too much at the start? Go Little Sam!

Rupp just moved slightly in front of Sam as they run side-by-side as they approach the 18-minute mark.

It is easier on the body to run an even pace, the surges take more out of you - when you put in a surge you hope the other guys go with you. This is a tactic that strength runners use against kickers to sap their finishing speed.

According to the prerace talk, there were real concerns that Galen would burn his candle to much by trying to keep up with Sam early on. So maybe he won't have the big kick.
