Sam Chelanga wanted to make a splash. Perhaps that explains why he went out so fast at NCAA pre-nationals in Indiana two weeks ago. One runner tried to stay with Chelanga. He was so exhausted early on by Chelanga’s frenetic pace that he fell back into the pack.
But Chelanga kept going, not stopping until he had bested Josh McDougal’s course record by more than five seconds. McDougal set that record last season, the precursor to winning the NCAA championship a month later. So the natural question emerged: Could Chelanga be better than McDougal, the 14-time Liberty All-American?
