Cheek the LB

Liberty coach Danny Rocco has always valued Wes Cheek’s versatility. Cheek has spent two years as a backup tailback, but he’s also been one of the Flames’ best coverage options on kickoffs and punts.
Heck, he even tried his hand (or foot) at punting last season.
That flexibility will be put to the test again this season. With Liberty’s linebacking unit depleted by injuries, Rocco moved Cheek from tailback to outside linebacker. He informed Cheek of the move Saturday night.

Thanks for posting the link, Fumbles. I read Chris' story while in traffic this morning.
Is this a case of our RB crew being so strong that moving Wes is a luxury? Or are we really needing to shore up the LBs and he's the best fit?
Considering Coach Rocco was an LB himself back in the day I fully trust his decision.

What a great quote:
I was excited about it. It’s something new. I know coach Rocco isn’t going to steer me wrong.
Due to the timing of this move, this is obviously because of the injuries we’ve had at LB, and with the depth we have at RB this was the most logical move. For this year, this move makes perfect sense; however, next year it could hurt us at RB. Although Lawrence and Williams have both looked good in their time they’ve had on the field.

From Chris' notes on the CCU victory ...

Rocco moved Wes Cheek from tailback to outside linebacker late in the summer, he certainly had plans to play Cheek often.
Saturday, Cheek got most of the snaps at weak-side linebacker, ahead of Pat Bannon. It wasn’t an indictment on Bannon’s play, though.
“What happens, when you get into a more open game, a throw game, Wes is just more suited for that,” Rocco said. “When it’s a run game, a more physical game, Pat’s more suited for that. That’s what that came down to.”

Rocco is making good decisions right now. In his postgame comments, he constantly talks about having the right personnel on the field. It is not personal to the players. Rocco cares about the players, but he has to make decisions that help us win. Winning is good for all the players. Cheek to linebacker has worked, especially with Hayes in the running back personnel.
