I wish I could come up with a witty reference about everytime you going away, but it just doesn't work in this instance. So here is a camp feature on our new transfer kicker ...
New transfer expected to give LU a kick of talent

By Chris Lang
Published: July 31, 2008

Paul Young finished his sophomore season at New Mexico State on a roll. He converted 25 of his last 26 extra-point attempts and seven of his last eight field-goal tries. Young went toe-to-toe with Kyle Hughes during spring practice and seemingly was poised to remain the Aggies’ top kicker.

But there was one problem. Hughes was on scholarship. Young was not. Young filled in admirably once Hughes was ruled academically ineligible prior to the start of the 2007 season, hitting a game-winning field goal against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and drilling a 41 yarder against Hawaii. But he would have never gotten the opportunity to kick at NMSU if Hughes’ grades had been in order.

Hughes regained the starting job by the end of the spring, leaving Young with a choice: Stay and languish on the bench, or look for a new place to play?

Not to take anything away from Paul, but there were a lot of nuggets in that short article.
Rocco wants to split the kicking duties — field goals, extra points, punts and kickoffs — among several players.
Starting cornerback Kent Hicks didn’t dress for Thursday’s practice.
“We’re waiting on some academics,” Rocco said. “He’s in the middle of a few distance learning classes. When that’s cleared up, we’ll move forward.”
Rocco said the issues should be cleared up within three to five days. Hicks missed one game last season due to academic troubles.
I was hoping last year that this was taken care of with his one game suspension, apparently not. Let’s hope he gets his stuff together as we could really use him.
Michael Brown: He’s splitting second-team reps with incumbent backup Spencer Landis, and his dual-threat ability tantalizes the coaching staff. “Even despite the fact that he’s sitting behind Brock (Smith), I still think he has a chance to get some plays and be dynamic,” Rocco said.
Anybody else think our offense is going to be extremely dangerous this year?! We have so many weapons.
Linebacker Mike Connolly is a “guy I can see playing a lot and playing early. He’s just really talented.”

Young’s brother is a student at Liberty, so Young knew about the school. And once he heard LU’s sales pitch, he was hooked.
A sibling already enrolled at LU is how we got Katie here, and it sounds like that strategy worked for our new kicker, too. :fbplayer

I saw the name and thought this was going to be a thread about "Desperate Housewives" and whatever happened to Mary Alice's husband.

From Chris' Flames Notes Monday ...
NewsAdvance wrote:Young hurt

A blocked extra point in the first quarter exacted a huge toll for the Flames.

After the kick was blocked, a Glenville State defender rolled into Liberty kicker Paul Young’s leg. He was helped off the field and later returned to the field in street clothes, walking with crutches. He wore a cast on his right leg.

“It’s an ankle or a shin,” Rocco said. “I don’t feel real good about it.”

hope the kid recovers- seems like we have the luxury of being relatively deep at the position, and Bevins is evidently reliable.

Ben Shipps will help fill the void left by his absence, as well.

More bad news from Chris ...
NewsAdvance wrote:Kicker Paul Young also fractured his right leg and will miss at least six weeks. He was hurt when a Glenville State defender plowed into him on a first-quarter extra-point attempt. Matt Bevins will handle kickoffs and long field goals, and Ben Shipps will handle extra points and short field goals.

If you're going to break your leg, I bet you hate doing it against a DII team.

Very unfortunate but unlike the Karcher era, we do have two very talented backups on waiting their turn.
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
