NORFOLK - Phoebus senior defensive back Markell Wilkins committed Monday night to join Old Dominion’s upstart football program.
Wilkins chose the Monarchs after receiving heavy interest from Liberty and Delaware.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pounder may have been overlooked by some of the bigger Division I-A programs, but was a major factor in the Phantoms’ unbeaten march to its Division 5 state title. He specializes in shutting down the run from his corner position and had six interceptions this season. The hard-hitting Wilkins also was used as a punt returner and receiver and has 4.45 speed in the 40.

It's easy to recruit to a team that has no history. You can tell a kid anything you want and it just might turn out to be true.

ODU is also in his back yard basically.... i live in the hampton roads area and i think your going to start seeing alot of kids going to ODU that would normally go to WMU, JMU, LU, ect. There facilities are really nice too. And they do have a history in football, although it originated like in the 1940's i believe.... I would be on the look out for ODU, hampton roads is known for spitting out some talent and alot of the kids who dont want to move away would fit well in norfolk. it wont be long and i think they'll be up trying to play in postseason ball....

ODU has an instant huge recruiting base in the 757 as trey alluded to. And with ODU running a spread offense youre gonna see a lot of speed athletes considering ODU as well
