That one started out about OJ Mayo and then went in a dozen directions.

There was an apocryphal story saying that a Christian athlete from way back when was looking at one of two schools, Liberty or Florida State. After expressing his situation to Bobby Bowden, Bowden told him that he'd be more effective as a Christian at a secular place such as Florida State than at Liberty. That guy chose Florida State. His name? Charlie Ward.

...

My last year at LU, we were looking at two basketball players who were seriously considering us. For one guy, it was the NBA, Louisville, or Liberty; for the other, it was Liberty or Missouri. We didn't get either, regrettably. The first guy, a 6-10, 300 lb. center named James Lang, went pro, although his stock fell right before the draft. He went to New Orleans, got injured, and bounced around the pros and the d-league before getting released. The other guy, a Lithuanian named Linas Kleiza, went to Missouri for two years going pro. He's now averaging 11 / 4 for the Denver Nuggets.

Oh, and our baseball team recruited former Atlanta Braves hurler John Rocker. No joke.

I had never heard that about Lang before......

I just thought it was b/c his relationship with former flamer Jeremy Moncxiueue

I really don't think we we considered....maybe in each of their top 20 choices, maybe

Ward is coaching high school basketball in Houston now. I think Sly should ask him if that's true. I doubt that it is.

But as coach of Westbury Christian, he may be able to point a player or 2 our way in the future.

That was the University of North Carolina. He may have liked LU to a point, but I remember reading he would have gone to UNC if he didn't go pro. IIRC, he is or was enrolled at UNC while in the NBA.

Still, could you imagine Howard rockin' the Vines Center???

UNC and Duke fans say that about every major basketball player who didn't go to college.

Ha, ha. I know, but this was actually printed...not just your usual rumor mill.

"NBA-bound big man Dwight Howard earned MVP honors at Saturday's Jordan Capital Classic ... Will go pro, but attend UNC -by InsideCarolina.com Apr 14, 2004"

I'll ask Charlie the next time I see him. But I could swear the Bobby Bowden QB story was tied to Casey Weldon.

SCAR may have to back me up on this, but I think LU seriously recruited Chris Webber, and I think he may have even made an official visit to campus.

I think you are right about the story being related to Casey.

There were a few Liberty students that went to high school with Chris Webber. He had interest in coming to Liberty. Rumor was that he was verbally saying (not giving a verbal) he was going to Liberty. An LU student and high school friend (Lisa) of his used to call him from my apartment. She talked, I paid the bill.

Isn't that against NCAA regs?

It was during his freshman year at Michigan. I'm sorry, I should have clarified. She and her friends said that he wanted to come to Liberty but there was too much "opportunity" at Michigan.

I think the NCAA's official stance is, if it had to do with Chris Webber, it's against their regs.

Oh. You're probably right. But it would be cool if it was Charlie Ward, right? Huh? Never mind...
