From a Naples, FL fishwrap ...
Barron Collier defensive end Kyle Van Duser joined teammate Cougar Norris as the school's two NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) recruits. Van Duser agreed to play for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., on Wednesday, while Norris previously committed to Appalachian State.

Van Duser will not receive an athletic scholarship, but was given a special invite to walk on with the program. Liberty doesn't have open walk-ons, Ivey said. Instead, players must be invited to join the team.

They did have open tryouts in the past....that's how I made the team in '99. Being that I hadn't played organized football since '91, I can assure you that I was not "invited".

The Flames Football Program holds two open tryout dates per year. One at the end of August after fall classes begin, and the second at the beginning of Spring Semester in January. At these tryouts, each potential walk-on will be tested on areas of body measurement, speed, agility, and strength. Based on performance results, potential walk-ons will be evaluated and graded on their ability to compete with our scholarship athletes. If the potential walk-on is determined to have the ability to compete at the Division I Level, he will then be added to the roster for participation (provided the individual meets academic and NCAA requirements) in either practice or off-season conditioning drills.
