I was talking to someone who seems to think that Eric Green started his college career elswhere and transferred into LU. Does anyone know if this is true? I don't remember that being the case!

I thought that he originally was recruited to play hoops for LU. Not aware of him transferring from any other college

Clemson recruited him but he came to LU due to his grandmother's wish is what I remember. I don't remember another school.

I can't seem to find anything about him at Miami if that's true.

I searched the entire media guide from last year and there are no mentions of Eric Green prior to the 1989 season. And then he was drafted in the 1990 NFL draft 21st overall.

I taught Eric in freshman English, and I do think that he came here originally to play basketball. He once told me that he was MVP of a high school basketball tournament that included Pervis Ellison, which tells you the kind of talent Eric must have had on the hardwood.

There were few people with the box out "skills" of Eric Green.

He brought none of that up poolside. However, he spoke of playing in Pittsburgh and later in Miami and Baltimore. He later coached in NFL Europe and in some Florida high schools, but now he was pretty much just taking it easy for awhile. He told me he had a son who was not with in the Bahamas, a son who was being heavily recruited to play college baseball. He told me he nearly went to Clemson. Chuck Reedy recruited him, but Danny Ford wanted blocking tight ends more than receiving ones, so they passed on Green. Plus, Green said Clemson already had Jim Riggs (from Laurinburg), who later played in the NFL with the Bengals.

Nice article on Eric.

I asked him what school. He said Liberty. That's when I mentioned Falwell and he turned to me and behind his dark shades said, "he was a great man. The very best." After a pause he added, "Jerry Falwell saved my life."

I asked him how. He told me he played ball at Liberty and got into some trouble. He didn't tell what that trouble was. I didn't ask, but he said Dr. Falwell gave him a second chance, enabled him to stay in school and stay on the team. He went on and on about how, if that hadn't happened, he would have probably dropped out, gone home to Savannah and never amounted to much of anything.
Another quote - same article.

PS and then I'm done. My wife's 40th birthday is today and sure enough I remembered to buy her a gift to give her today around 7 am this morning (a couple weeks ago I bought a dinner cruise package for tomorrow but had nothing for today). Thank goodness for the online flower websites.

How I remembered Eric was recruited by Clemson but came to Liberty instead is a little troubling.

Sy Green came to LU from Savannah GA to play D2 football. He came here as a project and wasn't very good in the begining. He briefly left the program during his freshman year and returned to Georgia after some personal issues, including his Mother's passing.

I've been on the hardwood with Sy. Believe it or not, he actually played guard, and viewed himself as a perimeter guy. He didn't like the inside game and would try to launch deep three balls. Occasionally one would fall and he'd start talkin' smack & stuff. He thought he had game, but he was definetly not a D2 hoops prospect. It's funny how legends grow.

He was a big athletic guy with a laid back personality. Rutigliano started here when Green was in his final year. Sam is credited with developing his potential into a top-20 NFL pick.

My bad, I didn't actually read it 'til now. I assumed that the article claimed that he was a legitimate basketball prospect. That's what I meant by that. I did enjoy the article, though.

I love the last 2 paragraphs of the article:
But it seems it did work out for Eric Green. He's a good guy. All 6-5, 280 of him. He played with his kids, he joked with other children. He was having a good time and while a high percentage of those around the pool were enjoying adult beverages, Eric drank Coca-Cola.

And none of that would, apparently, have been possible without the Reverend Dr. Jerry Falwell.
And if Eric has a son who plays baseball, somebody please get on the phone to Storm.
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
