Matthews' refusal to quit pays off

Reginald Matthews had every excuse to quit.

Most kids his age might have.

But after losing both his mother and the great-great grandmother who helped raise him, the Northeast defensive back was determined to succeed.

Matthews grew up surrounded by relatives who struggled to overcome drug problems. Some family members ended up in rehab. They were the lucky ones.

Others were in jail.

Matthews' mother and his great-great grandmother — whom Matthews always called "Big Ma" — wanted more for him. Wednesday, Matthews signed with Liberty University.
