Here is a Christmas Eve update from Phil Kornblut:
PalmettoSports.com wrote:Shrine Bowl LB J.B. Shippy (5-11 200) of Gaffney would love for the big schools to show him more interest. The problem is , in their eyes, he just not big enough. Major college recruiters just can't get past Shippy's lack of height despite the fact he made 130 tackles with 7 sacks this season. And as a junior he totaled 204 tackles and 7 sacks. Rutgers offered a while back but Shippy said he's not hearing much from them any more. He also has offers from Liberty, Newberry, Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb, and he's hearing from Appalachian State. Shippy said he is scheduled for an official visit to Liberty January 11th. He made an unofficial visit there during the season. He said Liberty and Newberry are showing the most interest.

And here is a mention in a Mid-December story on Rivals:
GamecockCentral.com wrote:Lucas was joined at linebacker by two other playmakers in Gaffney's J.B. Shippy and Myrtle Beach's Bruce Taylor. Shippy has a great nose for the football and does a nice job of wrapping up ball carriers. His size is the only thing that has prevented him from receiving more division-I attention.

It could also mean that we picked up a verbal from another LB that we don't know about right now and the offer may not have been still active from us. It is hard to tell. But I can't think of too many reasons somebody would come tour our facilities and then select that small DII school.

On second thought .... Gaffney Shrine Bowl linebacker J.B. Shippy now will sign a grant-in-aid with Georgia Southern after verbally commiting to Newberry late last month.

Verbals mean nothing... Like it's been said, it should be said again.

If any other school he's ever heard of comes up with an offer before Wednesday morning he'll probably change his mind again.
