There are several stories online about the transfer:
LB Ray Lloyd transferring to Liberty University
By Hugo Guzman ; 01/18/06
After a promising start to his Virginia Tech Hokies career, linebacker Ray Lloyd has decided to transfer to Liberty University to play out the rest of his college career.
Lloyd played in every game as a freshman in ’04, but various nagging injuries forced him to miss all but four games in his sophomore season. He made only one tackle in ’05, and it came on special teams. Now Lloyd will pack his bags and head to Liberty in a quest to get more playing time. He would have had a very hard time earning a starting spot at Virginia Tech because both Xavier Adibi and Vince Hall are returning and the coaching staff is considering moving safety Aaron Rouse to linebacker.
The 5’ 11’ 235 pound Lloyd should have no problem cracking the starting lineup at Liberty, and along with Pitt transfer RB Rashad Jennings, should make the Flames one of the most formidable division 1-AA programs in the nation.

Wow! That last statement is hefty. One of the best teams in I-AA. This is a team game, and while those are both stud recruits, we have to build lines on both sides of the ball for the two incoming guys to be successful.

I'm willing to bet the guys from Coastal are collectively having a stroke right about now, reading THAT line. whooooo!

That article was written by one of the VT writers. But I think its hard not to notice all the talent coming in that will be added to our terrific group of young players who were taking their knocks this past season.
Forgive my optimism, but I think Coach Rocco can have a VERY good season this fall. Toss out WF and there's no reason we can't compete and win the rest of the games. Sure we'll be underdogs in many of them, but we now have the talent to compete.

Could be a very interesting year...You guys and VMI have new coaches...I know LU has alot of young talent to go along with these I-A transfers...Coastal should still be good. CSU returns just about everyone (notably Drafts and Price)...I don't know much about what's going on w/ VMI's and GW's squad, but it seems like the league is really balancing out now...

Lets not get carried away here with that comment that was made. We need serious help in other areas and it could all start with the offensive and defensive lines. What we do there would go a long way towards our competitiness on the field.

League is balancing out. Yeah--it stinks top to bottom, now.

If only we could get WU to strap on the pads....tell me that wouldnt be some hard hitting!

WU does that mean Wofford or Winthrop
Posted: January 18th, 2006, 5:49 pm
by Stevev
I guess that means Winthrop since Wofford already has a team

Wofford is WC (Wofford College)...Winthrop is the only WU in Division I.
As for football, it may happen sometime, but with our 70/30 female/male ratio, we are always hurting to stay Title IX compliant, so adding football would force the addition of a ton of women's scholarships...I don't see where the money will come from to do all of that yet. I hope to see football one day at Winthrop, but if they do it, I want it to be done right, and not at the expense of any other programs...

But the article doesn't ask the question we all wanna know (with the appropriate response

)-"Why Liberty?"

maybe people aren't as surprised anymore by the choice of LU. After a while, we may not hear "why Liberty" anymore- just as you don't hear "why Notre Dame?" or why BYU?"

I can actually say for the first time in a long time that I'm not embarassed of LU football

I was more frustrated then embarressed watching the team unravel against VMI and then thruout the remainder of the season. But as bad as I felt- I'm sure those young men felt MUCH worse.
Just bringing Coach Rocco in, QUICKLY, was such a lift for them . EVERYONE is pumped- just gotta see how many games I can make- maybe commandeer a little Cessna or Piper to zip down there on the weekends. Somebody get me a nice rental or SCAR will have to drive me around.

The sad thing is most of the students don't know about these transfers or anything like that. I've mentioned next season to people and they go, "Yea, we're gonna suck" and I tell em the transfers and they're surprised and still say we'll suck. Maybe it's just the people I know though. Getting the student body excited is gonna be the big problem.

In general, the student body at large is clueless. All they know is whether nor not we won our last game. But if we start winnign this fall that will all change.

SJ that hasn't changed in 20 yrs. The majority of our students couldn't name 1 player on any of the teams. Its sad, but they're too busy rooting for "their" team (VT, UVa, Penn St, Texas, etc)
like SLY said, a few years of success may change that, at least for the high profile sports. I'm sure by last March everyone on campus knew who Katie Feenstra was even if they never saw a game.

2 things....1st for the first time in my life, I didnt want to go to a football game last year and felt it would take 1-2 years to get me excited again about LU Football, but honestly I've never been this excited and that turn around was only in a few months...i'd love to hear one person that is willing to say that letting Karcher go and getting Rocco wasn't the best move....I cant tell you how long it's been since we've gotten this type of transfers and talent....it's a good time to be a Liberty Football fan
2nd....SuperJon, I agree that nobody in the LU student body understands because they just dont know....something I've thought about is printing off hundreds of little slips that only says
www.flamefans.com and just putting them on the boards around school...We need more student involvement (to many "old hags" on here

)

HMO thats a GREAT idea. I've been emailing the link to everyone I can find an address for on the LAX and hockey sites, hopefully it'll start to pay off. I still think someone should slip it into the sports section of the Champion. Heck, maybe they could even do a phone interview w/ our guy SLY.

I'll see what I can do PAMedic...we do have an article about Rashad thats going to come out in the next edition...my article will be on the women's game.
Course, I'm still trying to get an article on FTN in there...wait till I'm editor, then these unmentioned things will definitely get their time in ink.

go for it bro- be bold. Or, as my old medic partner used to tell me: "never be afraid of getting fired"

A-Train, speaking from personal experience from when Ed Dantes and myself ran the Champion sports pages, i know you have your work cut out for you. However, i felt the same way and said the same things. Getting things like this through the censors is always tough. I have been reading this board for quite awhile but i decided to registar and join the discussions.
