Ben Shipps is a freshman on Schfourteenteen and ToTheLeft's hall. He has a birth defect where he doesn't have fully functional arms (you guys correct me if I'm wrong). He walked on this year as a kicker, and is being redshirted this year. He can kick field goals pretty good, but there's no chance he can be on the kickoff or punt teams.

so there's no chance he can tackle if need be?

I'm sure he's a great guy- but you need all 11 guys on the field to be able to make a hit, no?
Never say never, though...

I'm sure, if needed, he could make a hit. However, on the field goal unit, it's a lot less needed than the other two. The kid can kick, that's for sure.

PA you can count on 1 hand the times kickers have made a good tackle...I rather have you out there then a kicker making a tackle...if it comes down to him then you failed on special teams
did you see poor Adam Vin tonight one juke and he missed by about about 20 yards

done and done. I've got the Sambas in my overnight bag. SMOOTHIE knows my capabilities- I've got mad skill.
but its faulty logic- how many times have you heard "He's only got the kicker to beat" followed by "knocked outta bounds by the kicker"
last nite alone- at least twice. And we were on the good side of those!

I'm sure Ben could throw a shoulder and knock the guy down if need be.

horribly, horribly

at this point
poor Matt whomever!
hopefully we ARE recruiting for this position. As you can see with Noah around this year- it can be a HUGE difference maker. Just the confidence to run your offense the way you need to, without worry about converting those 37 yarders.

I spoke with Ben after the St. Francis game when my wife and I came up with the Hodges to visit Mike (#99) and Spencer (#67) .
Ben said he has made tackles by "earholing" the runner. He said when he does that, they go down quickly. He didn't elaborate on whether or not he was flagged for any penalties (as I thought grabbing the earhole might be similar to grabbing the facemask).
Also Spoke with Ben's dad, since the Shipps are also from the Sarasota (FL) area (actually Venice), about carpooling plans for next year's FL to VA roadtrips.

he must have pin point accuracy...even if they flag it I'll take a 15 yard penalty than a TD

Ben would be a great story but he'll have to earn his opportunities and I am all for the most competition.
My questions is whether or not we use a scholie on a kicker? Different coaches have different philosophies on the concept even at the I-A/FBS level. I know the Longhorns generally don't give scholies to kickers. Often times at I-A schools they are preferred walk-ons and get a scholie when they earn the starting the gig.
Since we are at the I-AA/FCS level, our scholarships are even more precious at 63 as opposed to 85. If we are making an offer to a kicker it must be because we REALLY like their abilities.

I think we should use a scholly for a kicker. Like others have mentioned, look what a difference Noah has made this year.

Clearly the staff felt Matt merited a scholie and I'll trust their judgement.
Welcome to the Flames family, Matt.

Raiders kicker Liberty bound
Scholarships for high school kickers are rare, but Matt Bevins made it his priority.
By DAVE JOHNSON | 247-4649

Nobody had to tell Warwick's Matt Bevins how difficult it is for kickers to earn a scholarship out of high school. Yet that was his goal all along, and now it's been met.
Bevins, who made 11 of 13 field-goal attempts last season for the Raiders, has given a verbal commitment to Liberty University. Bevins said he was offered a full ride and will be given a chance to compete for the starting job in 2008 — at place-kicker and punter.
"There were some schools that were dragging the scholarship along, saying they were going to offer, but Liberty was always straight-up with me," Bevins said. "It's tough for a kicker to get a scholarship right out of high school, but that was the priority for me."
