Rush improves

One reason for Liberty's defensive success against a Presbyterian team that entered the game with the nation's top pass offense was an improved pass rush. The Flames harassed quarterbacks Tim Webb and Grayson Mullins, tying a season high with three sacks. PC never got into a rhythm with its quick-hit passing game.

The lack of pressure against similar passing attacks was a big problem in all three of Liberty's losses. Facing little duress, quarterbacks from William & Mary, Elon and Toledo got into grooves in the short passing game.

"It's got to be everyone, linebackers and defensive line," Flames defensive end Steve Ackley said.

"Your defensive ends in the 3-4 are sort of like defensive tackles (in a 4-3 scheme). So the linebackers come off the edge a lot and have a huge opportunity to make a play. Everyone's got to make plays."
