I just found this forum and am glad to have an outlet for some ideas that I and some other alums in my area have come up with. I have already sent most of these ideas to the guys at Proto about a year ago, but the last correspondence I received from the guy was that they were looking into it but were buried under current projects. There are several logos to go along with these ideas.

Call the Football Stadium the "FIREPIT" since it looks like a big pit in the ground.

Then to create a raucous student fan base similar in enthusiasm and tradition of the Cameron Crazies, create the "Frenzies" which provides synergy (and a lot of merchandise options) with the following:

FURNACE FRENZIES Basketball Arena Fan Moniker, T-shirts et al

FIREPIT FRENZIES Football/Lacrosse Fan Moniker, "

FROZEN FRENZIES Hockey Fan Moniker, "

Also, have a live mascot like the Baylor Bears who have two black bears on campus who are tended by the zoology department. On the theme of "Liberty" have a trained Eagle that is released and circles the stadium in addition to the regular mascot.

I wish there'd be a general consensus as to what our mascot is going to be. Is it going to be eagles or is it going to be fire? I don't think we should constantly change between both, but that's just me.

I can shed some light on that! Officially we are the FLAMES. Our mascot is an Eagle. Similar to Stanford whose name is "The Cardinal" and have a Tree for a mascot or the Miami Hurricanes with a Duck as a mascot.
Hope that helps.

BTW, we need another mascot the ilk of Paul P who was AWESOME back in the day. I know he is now doing it professionaly, but he was ALWAYS worth the price of admission (If I had actually PAID to get in) to any LU game!

I agree about the mascot. The games that I saw him he was pretty boring.

Welcome Spidey-good to see this site is becoming known out there!

By the way- this is one of SLY's pet peeves. (the fact that the eagle thing is consistently being "crammed down our throats" as he puts it)

the branding thing is tough, no doubt.

I like the "Firepit" concept. Perhaps with gas prices going higher and higher, if a more exciting product is available right here in the Burg, more folks will come out.

I don't mind the Eagle concept. I really like it actually. However, I wish someone would decide if we're going to be fire or an eagle. I hate using both of them.

People ask what a Flame is and then we explain, only to have them ask, "Well what's with the fire stuff?" It's all about marketing and right now this is not a strong point. I just wish they'd make up their minds.

I agree with you about make up our minds. LU has gone through so many logos in the past several years it is not even funny. A logo doesn't have to be fancy. Look at VMIs logo, clear and doesn't use a mascot but you can see it a mile away.

Fire, good.

Eagle, bad.

But that's just my humble and rather questionable opinion.

I agree with emphasizing the Flames, and perhaps using the eagle as an old throwback classic logo. Also, what is the general opinion of the new logo on the Helmets? The logo is sleek and professional, but it seems a bit cumbersome when placed on the Helmets. How about a varsity secondary logo like most Universities have:

Notre Dame (the varsity/classic ND and the Fightin' Irish icon)
Wake Forest (the varsity/classic WF and the Deacon icon)
Duke (the varsity/classic D and the Blue Devil Head icon)
Kentucky (the varsity/classic UK and the Wildcat logo)

Tennesse Titans (Helmet logo-encircled T with stars and the Jersey logo-the sword icon)
Minnesota Vikings (Helmet logo-Viking Horn and main logo-Viking Head)
Philadelphia Eagles (Helmet logo-Wing and Jersey logo-the eagle head)

The idea for the design is the following:

1. The colors mirror the University colors as well as the colors associated with
Freedom/Liberty
2. The interlocking design creates a classic, varsity style design
3. The blue L with white stars is used to conjure up the idea of the flag (also synonymous
with Freedom/Liberty) or can be eliminated
3. The background includes a reflective silver color; or can be stark white
4. The letters are enclosed in a circle in order to provide a more fluid shape to attach the
sweeping flame tail
5. The flame tail can be in two designs (or more, if one can think of another):
a. The sweeping flame that is horizontal to the logo and sweeps around to the back of the
helmet or,
b. The perpendicular shorter flame that mimics the Tennessee Titan design

Another Helmet option in similar fashion to Michigan, Philadelphia Eagles, etc. Also, some have submitted to Zephyr Hats to create a hat for the university...check out there clever designs

I should clarify that I am a fan of the new logo; it just appears from an aesthetic standpoint on the helmets that it would work well like the Philly Eagles or the Titans who have a logo for the helment and the main logo (as is the case for the Philly Eagles) on the sleeve of the uniforms. The Varsity Letter style would merely be a complement the proto logo.

I like the new Eagle logo but feel it's overused. Every single club, organization or sport at Liberty has the Eagle, Liberty, and they change Flames to whatever they are.

I disagree with Sly:

Eagle good
Fire bad.

You have the right to be wrong.

:P

Seriously, there is nothing distinctive about Eagles. While Flames requires more effort it is also has the greatest payoff.

Going back to the original post, I like calling the stadium The Pit rather than The Firepit.

What about the idea in the first post of "Frenzies" over "Fanatics" for a raucous student section?

Also, any conjectures or hopes for what you want a full-fledged Division 1 capacity Williams Stadium to look like.

Also, Liberty should take a page from the Bill Belichick page and establish their system and fit players that many other teams aren't attracted to because they don't have the media "juice" and then mold them into the players they are looking for and think outside of the box-case in point, New England signed Steven Neal, a stand-out college wrestler who had not played college football, and molded him into an offensive lineman. See story.

http://www.patriots.com/search/index.cf ... 19&pcid=41

Know your system, analyze players who exhibit the type player you want and fit into your model; then mold them into the marquee players--not unlike picking off a bunch of good undervalued stocks, because you know your plan, you do your research and you can "see" things that others can't.

Just a thought.

I'm personally not a fan of Frenzies or Fanatics or anything like that. It's too cliche'd in my opinion. I want something extremely original.

I agree with SJ ... I like the SCREAM concept down at CCU. Something creative along those lines (perhaps working in some fiery aspect).

This brings back memories of many discussions along these lines from the old Firehouse board. Perhaps if I get a chance I'll see about bringing some of those old suggestions over here.

Yeah, maybe Proto can enlighten us as too how much they charged the university to conceptualize and design the logo we currently use. I would be interested in what the student body thought of it before it was "launched".. Folks the Logo isn't going anywhere anytime soon!

In the words of Frankenstein ' Fire BAD

But remeber there are several BIG TIME schools that have a different Team Name and Mascot. I mentioned those before and also thought of a few others....I just can't remeber them right now!!
Besides, I like the new look!

Don't mention SCREAM, please don't mention that. I HATED that name. It's horirble.

Student Community Restoring Enthusiasm in Athletic Matches

Yes, that's what SCREAM stood for.

One of the greatest student section names I've ever heard of is The Gene Pool for Purdue.

Alabama
Auburn
Texas A&M
etc.

If we want to brign a live eagle to games, great. Otherwise it does nothing for me. Nothing.

Now getting creative with fire is what makes us distinctive.
