From Chris' LU Notebook ...
Spread it out

Liberty quarterback Brock Smith was at his best Saturday night when the Flames were in the two-minute offense. The throws weren't long. Instead, with an empty backfield, Smith was taking two-step drops and firing on quick slants and hitches. Liberty moved the ball quickly and with precision.

That doesn't mean the Flames will run their hurry-up offense all game long, but expect to see more four-wide sets as the season progresses.

"We do have the ability to line up and play you very physically in closed formations, and we have enough talent on the edge to spread the ball out," Rocco said. "What it comes down to is the efficiency of your quarterback. As he got into a rhythm, he was very productive.

"It's all catch and throw. You don't hold the ball very long. Your protection doesn't have to be sound for very long. Whenever a free guy comes, we always throw hot off the free guy. So there's always some place to go with the football. It's all timing stuff."

interesting...I would like to see some of that...but that kind of offense doesn't work forever...but if you mix it up and keep the other defense off balance then it can be very effective.

It tends to work best when you speedy, athletic receivers and a workhorse in the backfield who can run up the middle. Sound familiar?
