LU Notebook: QB may be redshirted despite solid preseason

Lynchburg News & Advance

Liberty University quarterback Mike Brown has shown flash and poise during the first few weeks of practice. He has the ability to make tacklers miss, and he's impressed the coaching staff with his decision-making abilities.

Still, the chances of Brown playing in 2007 are small. On the depth chart, he's behind two quarterbacks - Brock Smith and Spencer Landis - who have had solid training camps.

I wouldn't mind going in to next year with a battle between a veteren Landis and a second-year Brown.

You know Brock will be here next year, right?

Haha.

I mean no disrespect to Spencer Landis, but Mike Brown will be our backup next year, and unless we recruit somebody amazing in the next year or two, will be the starter for three years after Brock graduates.

I still don't really like the automatic redshirt thing. If Brock were to go out and the guy is really better than Spencer, It would be a shame to not have him available. This would really bite if we were having an extraordinary year and not have our next best option for the playoffs.

I think he would be available in that circumstance. Gado got pulled out of a redshirt year.

I've seen him practice a lot. Anyone that's seen him practice will say the same that I did. He's moved the ball on the first team defense. He's scrambled out of blitzes from them. Him and Chris Summers for 3 years together will be great. The reason for the redshirt is he gets a year to develop this year, then gets another year to learn the system, and then he has three years after that.

The great thing about this kid is not only is he insanely athletic, but anytime he's on the sidelines, you can see him next to Brock talking to him and trying to get better.

Remember, the title of the article says he MAY get redshirted. All of the Freshmen MAY get redshirted, but we wont know definitely until Coach Rocco makes his final decision. Rocco is a smart guy who will do what's best for the program. If you remember, a reporter asked Rocco on National Signing Day if he intended to redshirt all of the freshmen automatically as he had stated in the past and Rocco responded saying that there is too much talent in this incoming class to keep that philosophy, and if the player came ready to work and was able to earn a spot, then so be it...

I think the plan would be to redshirt him, that way we get three solid years out of him after Brock is gone. If something happens where Brock gets his arm chopped off, Spencer breaks his leg, and Zach runs away to California, then we may see Brown this year. Other than that, there's absolutely no reason for him to play this year.

Just my guess, but I think he'd pull the shirt off Brown before he'd play ZT at QB this year.

I wasn't sure about that. I didn't know how much they were wanting to shirt Brown or where they stood with that. I'm just speaking from a fan that's been at practice. Obviously you know more than me.

Not really. That's why I said it was a guess. I haven't seen ZT take a snap at QB yet this year. I think he'd rather run Brown in there if something strange happened than put in someone who has done nothing but work with the RBs.

Makes sense. I was thinking about that when I posted, but I convinced myself that Zach's so athletic, and he's been there before playing QB, that even though he hasn't practiced there he'd help us back there.

My anticipation is that Zach becomes the feature back and that we end up using a healthy dose of both Zach and Rashad after Rashad returns. Rashad would be especially effective wearing down defenses late in the game when we have the lead. I'd imagine that Zach will mostly be in there under normal conditions and especially during the most critical situations.

The thing about Zach is once he gets in there and starts, it's awefully hard to pull him out. He's that good.

What's been happening at practice is a lot, and I mean a lot, of formations where they're both in the game at the same time. They're both at the point where it's hard to sit either one down.

It's hard to argue with having both of them in the backfield. There are endless possibilites, especially with the potential of our current offensive line.

I'm looking forward to seeing it.

SJ you many want to use some discretion when posting about formations and combinations used in practice. Coaches go ballistic over that kind of stuff. I would hate to have you feel the Wrath of Rocco.

If it's an open practice, I don't know if he could get too upset about it. It'll be on film soon enough anyway.

I'm not saying anything that any fan couldn't see for themselves. Also, I'm not getting into specifics. There's a lot of different possibilities in football.

Agreed, saying we may run a two back formation isn't earth shattering by any means. I would actually think teams would be expecting it.

I hear we're going to a power I formation with SCAR as the lead blocker.
