Tim Torrence, Trey Jacobs, Donald Manns and Chris Rocco were exceptions in 2006, true freshmen that played considerable snaps and made valuable contributions to Liberty's football team.

Flames coach Danny Rocco redshirted most of his other freshmen last season, and he expects to do the same in 2007.

Still, there are some true freshmen that could be valuable contributors this season, mostly on defense.

The Flames still have a need for depth in the defensive backfield, so players like Larry Claiborne and KaJuan Lee could see some time. Patrick Bannon is a candidate for the two-deep at linebacker. So is Michael Connolly.

"The other things about these defensive players is they can help you on special teams right away," Rocco said.

I am a little surprised to see Bannon and Conolly as candidates to play this year. I thought that the Linebacker position was pretty much filled with the redshirt freshmen coming in to the program like Adams, Brown, Tinsley, ODonnell, and last year's returnees. Besides we have 3 seniors starting this season.

A lot of couldas on that list, was just meant to be a discussion starter, really ... certainly they're all making a great impression on the coaching staff, but a lot of time between now and the time the redshirt decisions have to be made.
