Big South no longer a football pushover

CONCORD, N.C. - Gardner-Webb was still a relative newcomer to Division I football in 2002, when it went 2-1 to win the inaugural Big South football championship. The other three teams in the conference - Charleston Southern, Liberty and Elon - combined to go 10-24. Forget being a player in I-AA football. The Big South was a blip, at best.

"I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know if the league would make it," Gardner-Webb coach Steve Patton said at Friday's conference media day. "I didn't know if some teams wanted to jump to the Southern or the (Ohio Valley)."

The new TV deals should help the Big South gain more exposure outside of S.Carolina and Virginia.

Thanks to the MASN, I will be able to see Liberty for the first time! 8)
