Ian Guerin gives a look at his preseason picks

Ian Guerin is the local writer for the Sun Times in Myrtle Beach and covers Coastal sports. He put out today on his blog as part of the paper his picks for pre-season all conference and all of that.

It's funny. Everybody is all over Simpson's jock and, who knows, he may be the best player in the league. But WR is one of the few positions where you're completely dependant on one other player to come through for you. In this case that other player is a first year starter having to fill the shoes of one of the best the Big South has seen in a long time. good luck :twist

Simpson is by far the best in the league but you're right, unless they have someone that can get him the ball, how good he is doesn't really matter.

not too much to disagree with there, other than DB's .

I think we have a candidate at DB who can play with any of those guys.

I think once the post season awards come out, you'll see Greiser on there.

Remember, there's also a certain LB that's not on there that will definitely be all-conference at the end of the year (and probably wasn't eligible for preseason, and rightly so).

Man, Pope got screwed! He's a much better long-snapper than that McCarthy hump! Makes me so mad! :evil:


(No, not really. It's long-snapping. If one guy gets the job done every time and so does the other guy, how do you know which one's really better? I just had to give Pope some love though. Hopefully, we don't hear his name mentioned again until the post-season.)

My thinking is Zach either wasn't listed, or was listed as a WR. He's playing that A-back now so he's not a full time receiver and not a full time RB.

He was listed at running back. Tough to go 1-2 with Jennings and Zach, because if Rashad gets the number of carries I think he'll get, Zach's numbers won't be as nice as Tolbert's. At least that's my thinking.

Drops too many passes. Simpson and Flagler are no-brainers. Turner is the more dependable receiver between he and Jackson.

My questions:
A. Why does this guy not figure into preseason recognition more?
B. How can we utilize his talent better than just being the 12th man/Aback, or Rashad's backup?

In terms of offensive productivity, he is at the top of my list. He didn't carry the load as much during the DII opponents where Rashad put up gaudy numbers, but went in when Rashad was hurt against the tougher competition. I know that our blocking scheme requires a tight end most of the time, but it is tough to see one of our best weapons/aka 2005 freshman of the year, standing on the sideline or unrecognized.

I agree completely that Zach needs to be on the field. Rashad has all the potential in the world to be an elite back, but he has to hit the hole hard and not dance. Zach on the other hand, is already on his way to being an elite back.

Thanks medic, I lined it up in my reply box, but it got screwed up in the installment. Admitted weakness in this area.
The scoring jumped out at me as the greatest reason to get him on the field. I also had been watching film from Wake, GW, and VMI, and saw some incredible athleticism from Zach.

SJ, got home last night form Chicken Beach, (myrtle). 12 hrs. in the car. My sister and brother in law is opening a deli market on King Ave (MZ's) and I painted a mural on one of their walls. Say hi to Mike for me in Philosophy class. All weekend long, he questioned whether something actually existed or not. Whew! A little philosophy is a dangerous thing.
