Bennett believes Liberty the team to beat this year

David Bennett is still six weeks away from the first day of fall football camp, but the Coastal Carolina coach already knows who he's picking to win the Big South Conference - Liberty.

"They are probably the most improved team, not only in our conference, but in [NCAA Division] I-AA," Bennett said. "I think they're going to be the team to beat in the conference this year."

Unlike past seasons, when Bennett has found ways to talk down his squad, there is a bit more credence to his thoughts this summer.

For starters, the Chanticleers will be replacing 36 seniors, including quarterback Tyler Thigpen and defensive mainstays Jamar Leath and Quinton Teal.

On top of that, Liberty is returning talent and adding a number of top-tier transfers. On paper, it appears the Flames are ripe to overtake Coastal, the three-time defending league champs.

The Big South's deadline for pre-season picks - for team and preseason player awards - were due Thursday. The league will officially announce the selections during football media days, which will take place July 26-27 in Charlotte, N.C.

Bennett added that his pick for preseason offensive player of the year was Coastal senior Jerome Simpson. The highly touted receiver set school records for receptions (54), receiving yards (1,077) and touchdowns (16) last season.

He was named first-team All-Big South and second-team All-America last year

All coaches do this. It's all up to the players when it comes down to it.

Bennett said the same stuff 3 years ago. In fact, he's said it every year they've had a program.

I'm hoping we give them woodshed style beating and nothing nice about it.

Is this a stab at Liberty Football or something? I was thinking it was a nice complement.

Oh, it's a compliment, but David Bennett's never found a team that wasn't better than his leading up to the game.

I dunno...those tiles would be a bit hard to swallow more than likely.

Getting back to the topic...I can understand CDB saying that with what Coastal lost and what Liberty gained. I would not be surprised if he tried to motivate his guys with it (I would rather see LU pound those beach chickens into chicken patties though)

A. its SCRAPPLE, yeesh

B. believe it or not, my partner DID (I am well aware of whats in that crap. And I DO mean CRAP. Actually, as I helpfully pointed out to him: gonads, hoofs and eyeballs)

***
ROCK: its just that CDB pulls this line of bull-hocky every season. Its old now. They'll be good competition for anyone in FCS this year over there at CCU, don't let 'em snow you.

I could've sworn we had a favorite CDB quotes thread when I was at Coastal but I can't find it.

Did you expect me to spell it right? My buddy told me to try it several years ago when I was up there for Easter and I vowed that I would never get near that CRAP again.....Back on topic....Yes, Coach is always good for quotes...I will see if I can dig up some of our favorite teleconfernce quotes.....

Wooh. I tell ya. That Savannah State bunch. Man, they've got some athletes. I mean, just pure athletes. We better not be sleeping on ol' Savannah. I tell ya what, Coach Lemon's gonna have those boys ready. We better expect a war out there. It's going to be one heck of a tough team to beat.
