Bennett believes Liberty the team to beat this year
David Bennett is still six weeks away from the first day of fall football camp, but the Coastal Carolina coach already knows who he's picking to win the Big South Conference - Liberty.
"They are probably the most improved team, not only in our conference, but in [NCAA Division] I-AA," Bennett said. "I think they're going to be the team to beat in the conference this year."
Unlike past seasons, when Bennett has found ways to talk down his squad, there is a bit more credence to his thoughts this summer.
For starters, the Chanticleers will be replacing 36 seniors, including quarterback Tyler Thigpen and defensive mainstays Jamar Leath and Quinton Teal.
On top of that, Liberty is returning talent and adding a number of top-tier transfers. On paper, it appears the Flames are ripe to overtake Coastal, the three-time defending league champs.
The Big South's deadline for pre-season picks - for team and preseason player awards - were due Thursday. The league will officially announce the selections during football media days, which will take place July 26-27 in Charlotte, N.C.
Bennett added that his pick for preseason offensive player of the year was Coastal senior Jerome Simpson. The highly touted receiver set school records for receptions (54), receiving yards (1,077) and touchdowns (16) last season.
He was named first-team All-Big South and second-team All-America last year
