idea for JB: call it "Falwell Field"

Many universities name both their stadium and their field: I can't think of a better name or a better tribute than to name ours "Falwell Field."

I agree with you, I'm sure there will be something(s) named after him on campus. Heck, the way I feel now, I'd be fine if we changed our name to Falwell U.

Falwell Field at Williams Stadium. It does have a good and well deserved ring to it.

I'd prefer to rename North Campus in his honor before the football field, mainly b/c North Campus is much bigger and it also incorporates a lot more of what he and the university as a whole stand for than the football field alone could ever do. Besides, there's already 2 Falwell Fields in the area (@ Lynchburg Stadium & an airstrip, both named for Calvin but both regularly abbreviated as 'Falwell Field').

I think he would be cringing at the thought. When Oral Roberts & Jimmy Swaggart were naming their colleges after themselves, Jerry never caved into that mindset.

I agree...the measure of a truly great idea is that the idea transcends any one individual to rest on its own laurels...a la Thomas Jefferson's idea of a university translated to UVA. While I respect JF, I would be a bit disappointed to see a renaming of the university; now, the field or an academic building would be apropos.

I see the synergy with the field naming given JF's penchant for sports...but an academic hall would also work.

I think this is a GREAT idea....My brother will be attending/playing football at LU this fall, and during the recruiting process the coaches told him about the vision that Rev. Falwell had for the football program. I think it's only right for LU to continue striving to reach this vision, and to honor the man behind it. :D

I'd rather name North Campus after him.

However, at the end of every 3rd quarter is when the Jerry chant should be. He also said to finish strong, there's no better time to get that out than going into the last quarter.

I don't think we should rename the university either, I just stated that the way I feel now, it would be fine if they did that. I don't really want them to though.

I would not want the university name changed. However, I think something like Falwell Field would be great or maybe name the FOC after him, especially since it doesn't have a name right now.
It is my greatest desire however to see an eternal flame integrated into the school/sports program somehow, I just think it is so symbolic of his life and our schoo/sports programs. I would sign up and be honored to be one of the first to donate to the project. Hopefully someone with the correct connections can/will pass on the idea. How about The Falwell Flame?

I would help in whatever little way I could to get the Falwell Flame ablaze. I love that idea!

Here are a couple of ides from the LA Coliseum, very impressive for any who have seen it. This is too big, but maybe the top part is something that could be done.

I don't think there's any way they will name the University after him. He made it pretty clear he didn't want that. There have been some good ideas for fitting memorials posted here, but no need to rush. Plenty of time to come up with just the right thing after much thought and prayer.

What he would probably most want, and what we need most in the absence of his amazing fund-raising ability, is an endowment fund, which could be named after him. I just have a feeling there are some pretty heavy financial hitters who may be ready to step up to the plate in his memory.

They have started a Jerry Falwell Memorial Fund that they have asked people to give to.

Here at UVA the facilities that make up the place where UVA plays is Harrison Field (the playing field) at Scott Stadium (the originial stadium - seating, boxes, player facility) at The Carl Smith center (newest expansion of old stadium - boxes, seating decorative Jeffersonian decor, additional parking, upgraded player facility). Its a mouthful but every time the radio announcer says where the home game is being played apparently he must say all of it. So maybe it should be the Williams Stadium at the Falwell Center/Arena - whatever sounds best, but Dr. Falwell deserves the the greatest acknowledgement based on how much he loved/loves the game!

My other suggestion would be that if LU ever would adopt the residential college system - like Yale or Oxford - they could name the first Falwell College. I've posted stuff about this idea before. Yale's colleges are named after famous alums and administrators/faculty - Jonathan Edwards, Timothy Dwight.

Flameshaw, the FOC is called the Williams Football Operations Center right now.

My bad, and well it should be called Williams....FOC. I have just never heard it said before. Hope the finals went well.

I could not agree more. I think it's a great idea and incorporates Jerry perfectly into the school as a constant reminder.
