9 weeks.

I think it's time for a ticker. We know exactly when the game is now.

I'm not sure I can do one word. I would say I am "overwhelmingly enthralled" with the idea of football season starting.

Just a little "nugget" for those of us in a football deprived funk. Coach Gillespie ran some kind of ironman competition last week, including a brutal regiment of wt. lifting, drills, etc. in which a certain criteria must be reached to pass. Last year at this time, with the same program, only 13 passed. This year, all returners passed, but no walk-ons did. Not sure how exactly to interpret this, except that it is a mark of significant improvement upon last year and it is nothing that an average athlete can achieve.

Also, a question for those close: Is Stephen Sene (LT) back for another year?

Steven Sene has used up his eligibility. He played 1 at South Carolina, 1 year in JUCO, and 2 years here.

The players called it basic training. The final thing was something like 100 up-downs, 100 sit-ups, 100 pushups, and 100 jumping jacks. There may have been more to it, but the guys I know just told me about those four things. From what I hear, it was pretty intense.

To add to what madmat said, someone told me that the first year Coach Gillespie got here, only 3 people made it through. Going from 3 to 13 to all returners is amazing.

I could do that.

it may take me the better part of a week, but I'd get it done :D

When one of the guys told me about it, I was like, "That doesn't sound too hard for someone who's in shape." Then they pointed out that it wasn't just 100 situps in a row or 100 pushups in a row. There were pauses in between the situps so you couldn't get into a rythm, and there were breaks in the pushups where the player had to hold himself up. I got tired listening to people talk about it.

Several benefits to consider from such a program:
1. Team Chemistry improved, everyone getting on board.
2. Injury reduction, especially going into spring ball.
3. Better evaluation of talent during spring ball.
4. Mental toughness, which will transfer into success in critical points late in the game during the reg. season.
5. Competition always breeds greater achievement in the wt. room.
6. More physical on the field, come gametime.

Amazing...
...a week left in the basketball seasons, plus the tournaments, and we have a discussion going on about a PRACTICE game that will happen 2+ months down the road...
...that speaks volumes about how far the football program has progressed in only a year.

I could put up a countdown just like I did last year, but since it has to display at the top of the board no matter what part you're reading, I didn't want to be insulting to the other sports.

Careful gentlemen. Don't start wishing time away too soon or you will be looking 40 square in the eye soon enough. It goes fast enough believe me. I don't even try to anticipate fun stuff ahead as much as I used to because as time passes, so does my youthful looks and athletic body. And believe me it is very hard to get that back (the body that is)....I think I need to go work out now :(
