Is there any word about any kickers or punters coming? Or is there potential already here?

Somewhere on this board there was talk of a walkon from Florida State who tryed out for them (Fla State) and then came to LU and was kicking 40 - 50 yrd field goals practicing at LU. Not sure if the guy posting was joking around or not. I would like a confirmation that it is the truth.

If we only have 8-12 scholarships, we must use one for this purpose. Championships are won and lost on the basis of this position. We are good to strong in all other positions, but this is the glaring weekness. Consider the impact on playcalling, field position battles, and 4th down decisions. Think of the ravaging affect this had on the William & Mary and Gardner Webb game this past year.

Even FBS schools are hesitant to give scholies to kickers because it is SO difficult to judge who will excel at the collegiate level. When you are limited to 63 total rides, its a real gamble to sign a specialist. But I agree that it is essential we have somebody delivering at least adequate results. Just think of how many games we would've won the past two seasons if we would've converted all of our PATs and 35-yard and shorter FGs.

I know who you're talking about, I met him a few semesters ago. He had a hurt foot or something... I don't know if he would still be here, that was a while back ago. I don't know his name.

That would be a shame if he left. I don't think that Zach Kolque or whoever would cut it as our kicker right now.

So where do we stand for next season since there were no K/P's signed? Anyone have any insight here? Does Coach Rocco have confidence in the returning players that they will step up their game? or is there someone else in the wings?

Maybe Rocco is waiting for soccer practice and is going to "borrow" one of the players

If a player is under scholarship to soccer, he can't play football unless football uses one of its scholies. That is what makes it less likely for that to happen than some might assume.
My guess is we will be hearing about some preferred walk-ons soon to challenge the guys already on campus.

Crap...used the wrong smiley.
Thanks for explaining that, Sly

They should scout the intramural soccer fields this spring and look for guys with good leg strength; I would imagine that there are several guys out there that could be groomed for future kicking responsibilities (especially if they are freshmen now, the team could allow the best ones to shadow at practice to see if they have any latent talent concerning putting the ball throught the uprights.) Perhaps in a year or two they would be ready for game time, or sooner a la Boston College's mid-season replacement Kicker (regular guy former high school soccer player football fan-atic gets break of a lifetime to join the team and actually kicks the field goal to crush the dreams of Virginia Tech fans everywhere.)

All I know is that this was our most glaring weakness last year. We would have won at least 2 more games, if we would have just had a kicker that could consitently make fgs up to 35 yards. There are kids all over high school that can do this. If we don' t have someone coming in then I will be very dissapointed.

please don't bring up the William & Mary game.
or homecoming against VMI 2 yrs ago.
or anything else that would make me vomit at this hour.
(LIBERTINE agrees with me. )

I didn't mention those games, but we all know which ones I'm referring to

You implied them.
Those games didn't happen.
We didn't play them this year.
I refuse to believe it.
