Rocco wisely chose to go for 1 in the 3rd quarter vs W&M

Smoothie and Medic and others lambasted me for saying Rocco was smart not to go for 2 in that game even though we had kicking issues. My argument was that a 2 point conversion is a low percentage, we were ahead at the time and I never assume the other team is going to score touchdowns and 3 because even if we lose by 1 it will still be a good decision. Well the USA today agrees with me (as do most good football coaches btw

). It is easy to want to gamble as a fan but Rocco stuck with his guns. Anyway, read down this link and you will see some support of my position. I don't expect it to make a believer out of my good friends Smoothie and Medic but it is something.

Medic, notice our boy Andy Reid got a nod for best moustache. I would have voted for you though

You kind of remind me of Magnum lite

Admins can feel free to move this to another forum if it disolves into something other than a discussion about Rocco's decision in the 3rd quarter of the game vs the Tribe.

Unfortunately I can't bring up the article. It probably has something to do with me being on vacation and in a dial up situation. Rocco had a great first year and deseved his Coach of the Year Honors but in retrospect his sticking to his guns arguably cost us about three wins including that W&M game where he decided to put the second half in the hands of our all league QB, the legs of our stud RB, a WR with hands like molasses and a kicker who just couldn't miss. He easily could have expected several more TDs in that game with that lineup.
Oh, sorry, I must have been dreaming about another game because against W&M, our RB had just been carted off the field, our QB was thinking of better days in high school where he was a star kicker, our kicker was hoping he would be benched for the QB and the WR was still thinking about his three opps passes against Towson. Coach Rocco had a chance to make W&M score twice to win but instead we are now left to debate how losing by just one point isn't really that bad after all.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Rocco. He really reminds me of Bill Cowher in many ways but as a diehard Steeler fan I have to admit Cowher was outcoached in several AFC Championship games and likewise, Coach Rocco can probably work on his second half adjustments. At least that's on my wish list.

wow....wasn't it Chris Stokes who fumbled on the two at Towson....I am sure that wasn't brought up......A kicker in college is suppossed to kick field goals.....Rocco wasn't "sticking to his guns": he was more or less just used to having a kicker that could kick field goals.....several little things kept us from winning all but the Wake game....unless you're going to bring up RD, I suggest you butt out talking about being out coached...

Coach Rocco explained after the Towson game that he did not make any adjustments in the second half because he figured running Jennings up the middle would eventually work against 8 and 9 in the box. Coach didn't make the adjustments and Jennings was hit 2 yards deep virtually the entire second half. Zach's ability to misdirect against Towson's rush was why he was so effective BTW. Unfortunatley he was only in at QB for 2 or 3 plays.
Knowing which players were struggling and how that can determine play calling makes the W&M extra point call all the more disappointing. The Gardner Webb halftime adjustments (or lack thereof) has been extensively discussed on the board previously.
These are all minor adjustments that Rocco can easily correct. I think its going to be a lot of fun watching him build the program.

Baldspot, you never go for 2 that early in the game and when you are ahead. It didn't turn out the way we wanted but no coach would have done it in that situation except maybe Steve Spurrier because he is a riverboat gambler. I concede some of the other strategic questions to you but I can't give that one up. If someone had a crystal ball and could tell him our kicker would miss 4 kicks then I could see the folly of not going for 2 but even the worst kickers in the world (not saying we have those by the way) can be counted on for the kicks that we had but unfortunately they couldn't come through for us. However, we were in a position to win the game and not going for 2 did not cost us the game. Still a good decision.

I agree that he made the right decision. We should have won that game despite what calls were made.

wrong wrong wrong
(
Dallas cost Dallas the game against Washington- and every other game they've lost : O V E R - R A T E D)
I agree with Baldspot- the rest of you can suck eggs- as my grandmother used to say
(for the record- I think grandma agrees with Baldspot too)

Medic, did you just call me a loser? (kidding! See women's basketball thread if you don't get the joke). I am glad Manson is on this board to be the voice of reason

Medic, you are a sell described lunatic (not the LUnatics that SJ wants to start either) The fact that someone as unstable as you disagrees with me? Well that just makes me feel that much better about my position

I had almost forgotten about this game, and I would much rather prefer to forget it. How about we never talk about it ever again? This game and the G-W game should never, EVER be mentioned on this website again.
