Zach Terrell was the only Manassas Park star to play football for Liberty University this year. Next year, he will have company.
Toney White, Terrell's former MP teammate, has given Liberty a verbal commitment and plans to attend the Baptist school in Lynchburg on a full football scholarship.
White chose Liberty after taking a recent recruiting visit to the school. White attended the Flames' 14-13 Homecoming loss to William & Mary on Oct. 14.
"I thought I'd go ahead and go for it," White said.
White starred as an offensive right tackle for the Cougars and is a first team Group A All-State selection by the Associated Press. He is also a first team Bull Run and first team Region B honoree and played on Manassas Park's 2004 state championship team and state runner-up in 2005.
Liberty defensive backs coach Marshall Roberts recruited White when Flames coaches became interested after seeing a highlight tape of him.
"He got in touch with me a lot," White said.
White received interest from Ivy League schools Brown and Harvard, I-AA Richmond, William & Mary and 2004 national champion James Madison.
Liberty competes in the I-AA Big South Conference. It rebounded from going 1-10 in 2005 to go 6-5 this year under first-year coach and former Virginia assistant Danny Rocco.
The Flames finished fourth in the Big South at 2-2, ending the season on a three-game win streak.
"It just looks like it has a lot of promise," White said. "There's a lot of good players and they expect to be contenders in the next few years. I'll try my hardest to make it that way."
White said whether or not he will play next year will be determined after Liberty completes its preseason workouts. He said Liberty is deep on the offensive line and that he must work hard in order to land a starting spot.
"Some guys have three years of starting experience already," White said. "I'll work with what I got."
White was raised as a Methodist, but has no problem learning another religion.
"I'm willing to expand my religious devotions," he said. "Going there would be a big step in that direction."
