For those that may not be familiar, the Sammy-Texas State game is a renewal of a storied rivalry over here in the Lone Star State. They haven't played in a number of years after Texas State moved up to FBS but the matchup this Saturday at NRG Stadium will be exciting for all parties. It doesn't hurt that both are playing well right now.

Of all the rivalries in the Lone Star State, there may not be one as heated and fierce as the Texas State-Sam Houston series.

The rivalry between the Bobcats and Bearkats has existed for over 100 years, spanning across four different conferences. In fact, it is one of the most played series in the state of the Texas with 91 total meetings, more than SMU-Rice [91], Baylor-Texas Tech [82], Texas-Texas Tech [70], Texas A&M- Texas Tech [70] and TCU-Texas Tech [66], The series went on hiatus after the 2011 season, but will make its grand return this Saturday as the Bobcats battle the Bearkats at NRG Stadium in Houston.

But why does this game have such notoriety and why has the rivalry been on hiatus like so many instate rivalries have been?

For the record, I have covered many of these games over the past few decades. The fanbases of both schools are really excited to get this series back running. For Sam, this replaces the rivalry series with SFA on their schedule. Those three schools were all in the same league together for most of the past century. Now they are all in different leagues. And if you believe the speculation, Texas State is likely on the move to another league in the latest round of realignment which could mean dominoes fall for the other two to move as well.

Sam not showing well early against Texas State. Bearlats QB Hunter just fumbled in the midst of a sack which led to a scoop & score. TSU ran in the PAT to go up 15-0.

At this point, the MWC can take whoever they’d like from C-USA. Our strength of schedule can’t get any worse than current C-USA anyway.

After Sam responded with back-to-back TDs to get back into the game, Texas State just put together a big drive to go up 29-14 with a couple minutes left before the break.

Bearkats appeared to be stopped on an incompletion on 3rd & Goal following a muffed punt by TSU. But the Bobcats corner taunted after the play setting up a 1-yard TD run by the Sam QB.

Texas State hits a 60-yard FG at the buzzer.

SHSU goes to the break down 32-21

Honestly I don't think kennesaw state winning that game changes anything for us. Beating a 1-11 team gets us no more respect than a 0-12 team.
