FRIDAY'S 2021 POSITION OUTLOOK | SPECIAL TEAMS

Liberty returns all of its specialists in 2021 and should continue to have a solid group. Alex Barbir is now firmly entrenched as the team’s starting kicker and is back as a super senior this fall.

He had an up and down season, but he will be most remembered for his game winning field goal at Virginia Tech. He also had what ended up being the game winner against Coastal Carolina, and had the opportunity for a third game winning field goal as his kick was blocked at NC State.

Barbir was 13 of 20 on his field goals last season. He was a perfect 6 of 6 inside of 30 yards and 2 for 2 on kicks 50 yards or longer. He struggle din the mid-range, making just 5 of 12 kicks between 30 and 50 yards. Certainly, he will be focusing on improving his consistency and working towards becoming automatic on kicks inside of 45 yards this offseason. He also proved to be effective in kickoffs, as 25 of his 78 kickoffs went for touchbacks and made 50 of 52 extra points.

5 NEWCOMERS TO WATCH FOR THE FLAMES IN 2021

Much will be made this offseason of all the returners Liberty’s football team will have in the 2021 season and rightfully so. The Flames return 10 of 11 starters on both sides of the ball and will be expected to have another strong season coming off the best season in school history at 10-1 in 2020.

But that doesn’t mean head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff weren’t aggressive in bringing in additional talent to help improve the team. The Flames brought it a very talented group of high school players, several of whom will have a chance for playing time this fall, and there are also talented and experienced transfers that will join the team and compete for starting positions immediately. Here are five newcomers that could make an impact in the fall.

I just saw that ESPN's FPI has Liberty with a ranking of 65th, with a predicted record of 8-4. ESPN needs a football clinic.

Want to give us one? Which games do we lose?

In my "too early" poll, I will predict a 10-2 finish with loses to Ole Miss and one of the following: Syracuse or Army. I believe both games are winnable, but so is a 9-3 or 11-1 mark (pre-bowl).

I have not had time to breakdown the schedule yet, but last season I predicted 10-1 before season started.

Gov Northam announced this morning all social distancing and venue capacity restrictions will be lifted June 15. A full house at the Bill this season!

Sounds good, but take that as a grain as salt just in case. All of a sudden they can claim a rise in cases and change mandates all over again. Hopefully it will not happen if course.

I'm very optimistic about this upcoming season but I think some of you are overlooking how competitive some of these teams on our schedule will be. Ole miss, Syracuse, army, Louisiana and UAB are all very loseable games. I think 10-2 is very realistic but I will have concerns if Willis goes down with an injury.

Malik going down is a huge concern. Hopefully, JB and/or one of the youngsters can step up. That also highlights Freeze's emphasis on the youngsters during spring ball. Hopefully, that'll pay off as well.

I don't agree with this article that Willis played behind an "awful" offensive line. But they should take the comment to heart and play with a chip on their shoulders next year....

Last season's OL was one of the best I think I've seen in the 15 years I've followed the Flames. SI is on crack. And IIRC, 4 starters are returning this year but don't take that to the bank. The OL won't be an issue this year, but that SEC DL at Ole Miss might make it seem that way.

So I see they announced our time for the UAB game and looks like we'll get some good coverage. I thought we generally found out game times around June....anyone with any inside on when we might learn our game times for home games?

The only prediction is that I don't think we'd get the Cure Bowl again. But here's my preference:
1. Obviously a NY6
2. Duke Mayo in CLT.
3. Anything in FL.
4. The Bowl in Mobile as it'd also give me an excuse to return to Gulf Shores.
5. Military Bowl or anything that's not a bad drive to.

I just hope we play a Power 5 team in bowl game. No Sun Belt or Conference USA teams.
