Hey folks, just a fun little game. Comment with the following numbers in order from most impressive to least impressive for a QB or perhaps in order of what stats you’d rather have from our QB. I’ll reveal who each stat line belongs to and when each took place in a few days. Obviously rushing stats haven’t been included, so just base it off passing performance! Let’s see how we really feel about Buckshot’s performance this season.

1.242 of 390 / 62% Completion / 2,772 Yards / 12 TDs / 4 INT
2. 269 of 430 / 63% Completion / 3,032 Yards / 22 TDs / 10 INT
3. 295 of 434 / 68% Completion / 3,706 / 26 TDs / 9 INT
4. 255 of 402 / 63% Completion / 2,691 Yards / 13 TDs / 12 INT
5. 234 of 384 / 61% Completion / 3,291 Yards / 26 TDs / 5 INT
6. 207 of 325 / 64% Completion / 2,629 Yards / 24 TDs / 14 INT
7. 198 of 346 / 57% Completion / 2,609 Yards / 15 TDs / 7 INT
8. 257 of 384 / 67% Completion / 4,056 / 40 TDs / 10 INT
9. 240 of 439 / 54% Completion / 3,068 / 21 TDs / 18 INT

I would take QB number 5 with 26 TD's and 5 INT's and the 61% completion stat.

#8, and IMHO it isn't really that close. 14 more TDs than second best. That's 98 points. Most yards and 2nd highest completion % means you are not only scoring, you are moving the chains and keeping the ball from the other team. IMHO that more than offsets the 10 INTs, which really isn't that bad anyway when you are generating all those points.

This would be my order I believe...

8-3-5-1-2-6-7-4-9

#8 and #5 jump out to me right away. Not sure which I would take. I suppose I would have to know what kind of D I had on my team. If my D was great, I'd take QB #5. If my D was weak I'd have to go with QB #8.

That's an interesting way to look at it, hadn't thought of that myself!

I'm going to disagree on that. 8 has a pretty significant edge over 5 in every area except interceptions. I would think having a great defense would make those extra 5 interceptions LESS of a problem, not more. I'd take #8 either way, but if your defense is weak, the one thing you don't want is turnovers.

Yeah, my logic probably isn't perfect, but I am a Tressel Ball guy from Ohio. Basically, that means defense wins championships. If I have a loose defense that is giving up a ton of points, I better have a high octane offence to counter that which is why QB #8 is important. I agree that turnovers kill, but points are needed, too, in this scenario. If, however, I have a shut down defense, I can get by with an offence that doesn't score that many points, hence QB #5. Again, not perfect, just one way of thinking about it.

Here are who the stats belong to. Projections are made by taking the average of all the stats this season and applying them to a twelve game stretch. Obviously rushing stats weren't considered, but this should make us a little more thankful for what we've gotten so far from Buckshot ESPECIALLY when compared to his final stat line from last season. Now, we just have to hope the end of the season reflects the first half.

Unless there is a wheel to spin or dice to throw ( and there's no thinking involved) I don't play games . . . . geez I'm starting to sound like BC.

What's really striking about Buckshots numbers is it's clear he has responded to coaching in a tangible way other than not being 100% with the RPO. He is trending for 7% higher comp%, almost an extra games worth of yards, and taking 5 picks and turning them into TDs.

Something tells me BC is not much of a casino guy.

That projection may be a little optimistic, as Buckshot faces all FBS team in the back half of season and they include Virginia, BYU, and Big 10’s Rutgers ......instead of a schedule including 2 average FCS teams in the first half.
Buckshot also has a history of fading late in season.....I hope better coaching will overcome that late season collapse.

As of this post his projected totals were...

234 of 384 / 61% Completion / 3,291 Yards / 26 TDs / 5 INT

They are now...
241 of 392 / 61% Completion / 3,539 Yards / 28 TDs / 4 INT

2018 Stats were...
240 of 439 / 54% Completion / 3,068 / 21 TDs / 18 INT (CALVERT 2018)

Compared with last year, and even despite his shaky start, it can be said that Buckshot really did have an excellent senior year. I had my doubts at the beginning of the season, but he has more than made up for it.

Over the last 10 years there have been only been 3 QBs that have finished the season with 30+ Passing TDs and only 3 interceptions: Kellen Moore, Bryce Petty, and AJ McCarron. Odds are Buckshot doesn't hold steady at three, but even if he ends up at 30+ TDs and 4-5 interceptions he is in rare company over the last decade of FBS QBs. He also leads the country currently in most consecutive passes without an interception.

Major objective was to reduce i interception ratio. It's a major understatement to say that was accomplished. What could he have accomplished in 4 years with currect coaching staff? Should be great draw for qb prospects.

Flip 3 and 8 and that's my choices

As someone who prefers a pass heavy offense, I actually would take higher completion percentage over higher touchdowns

There’s a great article in The Athletic about Calvert. Not gonna quote it to respect the paywall, but essentially they mentioned a couple things that led to his improvement this year:

1) He’s spending more time in the film room than he’s ever spent. This likely goes back to Freeze calling out his preparation in the preseason.

2) While Freeze was out of practice, our QB coach could work with Calvert on mechanics, but he didn’t know the offense as well as Freeze and couldn’t teach the intricacies of it like Freeze can.

3) Freeze and Calvert have worked out a system to help Calvert make pre-snap reads when Calvert is unsure of the read.

It’s a really great article and speaks to the work Calvert is putting in and Freeze’s talent as a coach.

Hot Take. Four years of Freeze would have put Calvert in the first two days of the draft.

It just makes it impossible to not wonder what may have been with Buckshot had he had this kind of coaching during his entire tenure.

His development from the time Freeze got back on the field until now is quite possibly the biggest indictment of the previous offensive staff.

I've been saying for years that Joe Daley is at best so-so and unimaginative as an OC and awful as a QB coach. Thankfully, he's Bob Davie's problem now.

The irony is LU would have beat Syracuse if Gill was still here. The new offense with HF out was a real problem.
