We get our first road test of the season. They lost to Mississippi State 38-28 and will be looking to avoid starting 0-2.

Traditional Sun Belt powerhouse that has a rabid fanbase and clearly a game squad giving Hail State a strong challenge. This will probably be a better barometer of our strength than Syracuse.

Going to be a tough game. They had over 400 yards against Mississippi State with a bulk of that coming through the air. They seem to have 2 main receivers who accounted for almost half of the offense. Our pass defense will be tested much more than against Cuse.

Could start the season 0-2

A good pass rush will slow down their passing, also shut down WR screens. Key to this game will be our offense.

It will be on ESPN+.
I watched a good bit of the Louisiana vs Miss. St game and came away impressed with their offensive line play and the ability of their running game. Though the score was 38-28 it was 35-14 about midway in the fourth quarter. I also do not think their qb is better than Tommy Devito and besides the screen game we shut their passing game down. I think this is a legit 50/50 game. If our defense plays the same and our offense plays the way we think they can then we win this one by 10.

This will be a tough matchup for sure. I agree with Sly, this will be a more accurate barometer of where we are.

The best part of that stadium pic above would be those tents in the top right corner. Boiling pots aplenty!

Couple of thoughts. I think we're better off with Hugh staying back and getting rest and have Austin/Harris call the plays. I also think the run game will do significantly better as we won't see a front 7 like that again this season.
Lastly, you have to worry about Buck. He can't read a defense and any ounce of pressure that comes his way, he forces passes or holds on the ball for sacks. We're going to see ULL mimic Syracuse game plan.

ULL will definitely be bringing everything with the kitchen sink to Buckshot. They saw last week, put him under pressure and he'll beat himself.

Syracuse got home on 3 and 4 man fronts. ULL shouldn't have the talent to replicate it.

Buck moved to the complete top of the list of worries. Weve seen this oline play better against g5 competition. Buck meanwhile has not been good in quite some time. That was a miserable performance in all facets from him. As 3.5 year starter its just not acceptable to play that poorly in all facets. Aside from that its health of coach and yarborough and frith to me.

I don’t think it’s nearly as much about protection as it is him making the reads. Freeze mentioned he made the wrong read on RPOs multiple times. When he chose to pass it, he held onto it too long because he couldn’t go through his reads or he locked in on someone.
For two years Joe Dailey said he wanted us to play fast and we never truly did that consistently. We’re seeing some of that may have been because the quarterback wasn’t great at processing it quickly.
Calvert was a really, really good FCS quarterback. But there’s a reason we got him when we were an FCS school. Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t get the opportunity to platoon or contribute in specialty areas like many of the other guys who were FCS talent. He’s out in the open and the spotlight is on him. When he hits his talent ceiling, everyone knows much quicker than other positions.

Manson just tweeted this quote from Freeze, "I won't hesitate to play JB as he is one play away from being the starter(Buck getting injured)" or one more performance like the one this past Saturday. Both of his INT's were bad, he got out of whack mechanically, rushed and then just chucked it.
Game 2 for Buckshot will be a significant test that may preview what the QB situation will be like for the rest of the season.
I want Buck to rebound in a big way next week and I think it is possible, but I am 100% for the best player for the team being the starter.

If he wasn’t hesitant to play JB because he’s one play away I’d be interested why he decided not to play him
The start of the 4th quarter. It would have given him more game experience without much risk. May have even pumped up the team some

Hugh Freeze discussed Syracuse, Louisiana, Buckshot, Johnathan Bennett, and much more. PC quotes:

I listened to Freese's press conference, and his comments about Bennett were not said to insinuate that Buckshot will be hearing Bennett's footsteps anytime soon. Although, he didn't give Buckshot a vote of confidence like he did last Monday. I think that there's a lot going on with Buck's recent performances, but on the Syracuse and Auburn games, I'll give him some breaks. Again, we won't see that kind of defense again, and the closest we'll get to it is UVA and BYU. One of the saving graces, is SU was not a game we were supposed to win, and in most people's projections for our Win-Loss record, was one of our losses. The most disappointing aspect is that, like last year's UVA game, we left a huge "what could have happened" on the field. I still think we and Buckshot will be fine. Although, Bennett looked smooth and confident, much like Buckshot did against Tech 3 years ago. I'd like to see him get a few series a game and decent time in mop up games.

It could be that are first EXTENDED viewing of JB will be in 3 weeks when Hampton comes to town. But then again. . . who knows.
Louisiana-Laf. only had two sacks last week against Miss. St. They only had 26 all of last year. So, I expect Buck to be more comfortable than he was against Syracuse.

Bennett should have entered game in 3rd quarter. He may could have lit a fire under the offense.

I know buckshot didn't play his best at all and reverted back to some old problematic ways but it is just week 1. I appreciate Freeze and Austin and Harris having faith in a pretty much 4 year starter in the first game of the season. From all accounts during preseason camp it seemed Buck had won the staff over completely. 1 game doesnt guarantee that he is not the guy moving forward. Now, if he does continue to play like last week then I am all for JB getting his fair shot. Do whats best for the team and I do not doubt HCHF would do that.
