SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On the strength of last year's 10-3 campaign, preseason honors for members of the 2019 Orange football team continue to pour in.

Placekicker Andre Szmyt and safety Andre Cisco have picked up first-team preseason All-America honors from Lindy's and Phil Steele. Additionally, the Orange are well represented on the preseason all-conference teams of both outlets with 10 combined players earning recognition.

Szmyt's awards completed a sweep. The former walk-on is a projected first-team All-American by all four major preseason magazines (Athlon, Street & Smith's, Lindy's and Phil Steele). Szmyt was also voted college football's No. 1 kicker by Lindy's.

Football season officially starts next month with Syracuse!! They ended the season ranked 15th. This game will also be the LU coaching debut of Hugh Freeze. Should be an amazing atmosphere at Williams Stadium

The Kool Aid seems stronger this year.

Let's not be too impressed with SU last season and preseason rankings. Most of the teams they beat had loosing records and were in re-building seasons. SU lost their leading rusher in QB Eric Dungey and their run defense has gotten worse. They're also pretty shallow in their o-line depth chart, weak secondary with no SS and are making due with pretty much one QB. I'm from the SU area and their is much concern regarding the season outlook. A big win by Liberty would pretty much confirm all SU fan base fears about the team. Not to mention that Liberty is a much improved team with a great coach edition HCHF. This win by Liberty would set the season off right for Liberty and wrong for SU!

We may get killed by them, but I doubt they will be top 25 by the end of the season.

This really is a potential statement game for Liberty. The debut of Hugh Freeze, the first game of year two in FBS, potential ESPN game, and a rocking house potentially if the weather is better than ODU last year...if we win this one, as long as we don't pull a "typical Liberty", it could catapult us into a real special season

If we were to play SU 100 times we might win one. I would love to see us do it, but let's be realistic. New coach, new system, new players, etc. I will be at the game, hoping for the best and excited to see the energy of a big game atmosphere on the mountain.

I don't have us winning this one Shaw, but you can't discount how big a win like that against the first ever P5 to come to Williams Stadium could do big things for the team psyche

Curious. What would a "typical Liberty" game look like for us against Syracuse?

Playing way above our grade for 3 quarters, letting the moment be too big for the coaching staff who then makes iffy play calls that may have worked in earlier quarters but just displays a gratuitous lack of conditioning and depth late in the game to put the flailing and exhausted liability that we call defense back on the field.

Or he may have been alluding to our 2015 season where we beat an elite Montana team then proceed to lose to Gardner Webb and Monmouth.

There is no "typical Liberty" scenario for the Syracuse game. Maine? Sure. NMSU or NM? Definitely qualify. It will take everything and some for LU to win against the Cuse (spoiler: I believe we pull it off somehow), but there is no situation that plays out during that game that should leave anyone feeling "typical Liberty".

We lose by 50? We aren't THERE (yet). Where's THERE? Top 25 program in FBS (it is unconscionable to compare anything in FCS to where we are now).
We lose by 17, but kept it close til the 4th quarter? That's what is expected.
We lose by 2 on a last second FG? It's incredible we were in a position to win the game against a Top 25, P5, ACC school at home!
We Win? Typical Liberty 8)

I wasn't referring to a "typical Liberty" scenario FOR the Syracuse game...I mean for after the Syracuse game. If (and that is a very big IF) we pulled off the upset against Syracuse, and we do not pull a "typical Liberty" in one of the games that follow (especially against someone like Maine), that game could be a springboard to a very significant season

Their QB was not all that impressive in games last season. Here is a sentence from Mansons preview.

"In total, DeVito played in 8 games in 2018, completing 44-of-87 passes for 525 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions."

Those are buckshot ratios.

Has anyone else watched all his games from last year? Kid is accurate and poised and been through the fire of coming off the bench in real tough situations and places to play - Baylor was probably saying same thing about Buckshot after his freshman year numbers...

Syracuse DB Kyle Strickland

DeVito (Cuse QB) was inconsistent last year. He led Cuse to a come from behind victory over UNC and extended a lead big time against FSU. He played below par against Notre Dame and WMU.

He has one of the best arm's in college FB. He still is trying to find all the intangibles that Eric Dungey possessed.

Some folks give Liberty a chance at beating Syracuse. Some folks give Syracuse a chance at beating Clemson on September 14. USA Today Pre-season magazine says Syracuse is Clemson's toughest game this season.

In a perfect world, LU will beat Syracuse and Syracuse will beat Clemson.

Will be tuff but if it happened the sky's the limit for this season. For a few weeks after week 1 we play some winnable games.

There's not a game on schedule that I would "circle" as a loss, right now.
