I'm going to this one as a fan. I'll cheer when I need to, but the thing I love about away games is I get to sit back and actually watch the game more than when we're at home. At home games I miss a good 5-10 plays because I'm trying to organize things and get things going.

Althought VMI has played Big South teams close and we haven't closed out any away games (unless you count Savannah State), with our momentum and Rojas' last game... we win.

LU Notebook: Interior linemen overcome growing pains

Former Liberty football coach Ken Karcher didn't have much choice than to press freshmen Britt Stone and Mike Godsil into quick action last season.
He didn't have many options along the offensive line, and Stone and Godsil showed enough raw skill to merit starting roles.

That raw skill has evolved into mature play this season, and Liberty's run game has benefited.

Godsil (center) and Stone (left guard) give the Flames a solid foundation for the next three years on the interior of the line.

"The offensive line has really, really jelled," Liberty coach Danny Rocco said. "Early in the season, we were getting decent to good play out of (left tackle Stephen) Sene and decent to good play out of (right tackle) Eddie Pinigis. We were inconsistent in the interior at the center and guard positions.

"As those guys have continued to go through their second year, they've definitely gotten better."

Stone and Godsil have developed an excellent rapport with each other, something that will benefit the Flames down the line.

"I kind of use the example of playing backyard football," Stone said. "You look at your buddy and he knows that you know (that look means) 'go long.' It's kind of the same thing. We don't have to say anything that will tip off a defense. We know each other's tendencies and each other's abilities and how to make that work against the different schemes we see."

Playoff bid?

Barring a strange string of circumstances, Coastal Carolina should be in line for a Division I-AA playoff berth if it can beat Charleston Southern Saturday to claim the Big South championship outright.

Because so many teams from automatic bid conferences are struggling to get to 8-3, the traditional watermark of an at-large playoff team, Coastal Carolina at 9-2 would be viewed as close to a lock to make the 16-team field. The Chanticleers beat Furman, Wofford and South Carolina State out of conference this season.

No conference team has ever participated in the I-AA playoffs.

Sore paw

Liberty linebacker Brandon Duke broke the first metacarpal, the bone that connects the thumb to the wrist, in his right hand two plays into last Saturday's game.

He expects to play Saturday at VMI, but he'll do so wearing a bulky cast to protect the broken bone.

"I saw him here on Sunday morning and he showed me his hand and it was swollen about twice the size of a normal hand," Rocco said. "I said, 'ooh, that's ugly right there.'"

Liberty's Manny Rojas was one of three players to earn two conference defensive player of the week honors this season. Coastal Carolina's Quinton Teal and Gardner-Webb's Mario E. Brown were the others. *** Liberty ranks 15th in Division I-AA in home attendance this season. A school record 66,765 fans attended Liberty's six home games. Only James Madison (75,664) had a higher mark among Virginia's seven I-AA programs. *** Liberty ranks ninth in I-AA in scoring defense (14.0 ppg) and sixth nationally in kickoff-return yardage (24.22 yards per return). *** Liberty is one of three teams in I-AA to return two kickoffs for touchdowns this season. Wynton Jackson returned one last week against Charleston Southern. Dominic Bolden returned one against Coastal Carolina.
