The downside to being an independent vs. having a conference affiliation at FBS is that there is almost zero margin for error when it comes to bowl eligibility. With a conference, you can afford to drop a non-con game or two and still get to the magic number with conference play. Our problem is we don't have that "back up plan" of sorts.
