I have always maintained the key to defense is D Line. Put pressure on QBS and disrupt the run game. When the guys on back end of defense are making tackles, that means yards are being gained.

Ballcoach, so you're saying you don't want a safety leading your team in tackles? :dontgetit

Safeties make lot of tackles, as result of pass plays. But when safeties make tackles on run plays, it means yards and first downs are probably being made.

I like for D line to make tackles.

Like whatever you want. The fact is, in modern football the job of the DL, and especially the interior positions, is primarily to occupy blockers so the LBs and safeties can get to the ball. They are almost never among the leading tacklers, and a really good NG can dominate a game without ever touching a ball carrier.

So I guess you are saying that our problem is the Linebackers were not good at tackling last year ?

Will Brandon Tillmon help solve that problem ?

Lb def werent the problem. 2 of the best weve had in 10 yrs. No depth and little talent on d line outside of wells and avery. Corner play was better than safety but i think we have loads of depth and experience on the back end this year.

We have depth on dl now. Do we have talent. Thats what we will see and if we can adjust schematically.

What little football I played in the Army, I was a defensive end. My assignment was to "get the QB", or stop run at or behind line of scrimmage.

I'll say LB was the problem. Yes, two of the best athletes we've had there, but that is raw athletic ability. For the second consecutive year we are transitioning a DB into LB.

Fundamentally if DL play begins to excel, that helps the other position groups. QB pressures lead to early releases, inaccurate passes and give DBs turnover opportunities. DBs can only cover for a finite amount of time. Without pressure on the QB, WRs just have to get open and the chains will move. No position group affects the success of other groups like the linemen on either side.

He had a good HS career, and at the time seemed like a great get for us. It will be interesting to see how much he gets to actually play at Cinci. I thought he underachieved at Liberty, and I think Tillman and Ajayi will be an upgrade.

I agree oldflame. The coaches have been really high on both Tillman's move to lb and have consistently been high on ajayi's ability since he got here. McKinney was a major disappointment in my book. I do hope he does well at Cincinnati.

Lots of people will tell you what i said about mcginty and mckinney. Look at all the schools interest in mckinney. There was a lot of schematic issues or at least thats what people i talk to say and a position coach with little experience and no respect from players. But hey everyone has their own opinions. I very rarely make mine just on my own observations.

I agree 100% with you about the coaching. I was scratching my head for the last 2 years of Nick's time there. I could never grasp the series rotation among the 1st,2nd and 3rd string. Nicks red shirt freshman year for DR he never came off the field other than an occasional breather if needed. Then after Torbush left the next 2 years none of the MLB's played more than a third of a game. I saw Nick make a bonehead play and not get called out and then I would see him make a big play and be fired up and get pulled because his time was up.
