With the 2017 spring game in the rear view mirror, its time to start looking ahead to the 2017 season, Liberty's final season as an FCS program. Let's start of course with the triggermen:

Players Lost
Stephon Masha (moved to RB)
Spence Jones (moved to WR and H)

Players Returning
Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert 150/262 1931 Yards 15 TDs 9 INTs
David Jeremiah No 2016 stats (walk-on)
Rudiger Yearick No 2016 stats (redshirt)

Players Incoming
Mason Cunningham 6'0" 190 Lbs (Transfer from NE Mississippi CC)

With 2016 starter Masha moving to another skill position, this is Calvert's team for 2017. He was named the full time starter for Robert Morris and all he did was throw for 340 yards and 4 TDs. Going into spring ball as the unquestioned starter no doubt helped the rising sophomore and with a full cycle in Joe Dailey's offense, I expect to see big numbers this fall.

Cunningham was a pleasant surprise after enrolling in January, solidly winning the #2 QB job over Yearick. He had a nice TD in the spring game on Saturday and can only get better as he gets into the summer lifting program and gets more chemistry with the wideouts.

Yearick was a bit of a disappointment, losing the backup job to Cunningham after redshirting in 2016 and having all of last spring to work as well. He will go into 2017 as the #3 and will need to do a good bit of work if he is someone the coaches will be able to count on should something happen to the QBs above him

Slightly off topic, but any word on how Masha did as WR at the spring game? Did he have any receptions or runs?

Not much, if anything, and he is actually at RB now. With Yearick not coming along as hoped, Masha is still probably the 3rd best QB on our roster, whereas by next fall, with a JUCO and a FR coming in, he wil probably be # 5 at RB. I can picture a scenario where he ends up back at QB as an insurance policy, especially if either Buckshot or Cunningham have even the slightest injury.

He needs to be utilized somewhere in the offense. Line him up and get him the ball. putting him in a Wildcat formation is better than running off right tackle for no gain, as we did so many, many times last season.

I would actually be okay with this identity. It would mean the OC calling even, run and pass plays with enough direct snaps to keep every defense honest. Even Dallas used their jet sweep 2 or 3 times a game and that lead to a passing touchdown with broken coverage.
