The Good and Bad: Jacksonville State

The rules are simple:
Post three good things from this game
Post three bad things from this game
Ready?
Go.
(PS - I know it's going to be hard to find three good things or limit it to three bad things. That's the game though. You have to find three good things to play.)

The Good
Quarterback
At least we know who will start moving forward.
Hickson
That kid is gonna be really good.
No Major Injuries
That's a win, right?
The Bad
Offense
It was horrible.
Special Teams
Gave up a punt return for a TD. Only had 9 guys on a PAT.
Attendance
Having only 15k show up for the #3 team in the country is pretty bad. The fan base is leaving and leaving quickly.

The good
1. Calvert is clearly the best choice at QB. Just give him some protection and less dropped passes and he'll be fine.
2. Defense played well minus a few lapses.
3. I made It through 3 quarters.
Bad
1. Turner Gill for not having the balls to make a choice one way or the other at QB. It wasn't fair for either Calvert or Masha.
2. Fan support. I realize we had a down year but we were hosting a good 5 team....
3. Offense overall. Enough said...

Good
1. Frankie is a baller. We need to get him more touches.
2. Probert. Yeah, I know. But he looked really sharp and seems to be adjusting to his role.
3. Defensive Front. Under the circumstances they kept Jenkins pressured enough that it helped us avoid getting 70ed.
Bad
1. Offensive Line. They were getting manhandled all night.
2. Offensive Playcalling. At some point does Turner have to do it himself?
3. Tackling. This has gone from something of note last week to an epidemic.

3 Good Things:
1. Frankie Hickson
2. QB Controversy seems to be over now, finally.
3. TREY TURNER! 12 Punts and a 45 yard average.
3 Bad Things:
1. I wouldn't consider the tackling bad as a whole, but the moments we tackled poorly ended up being BIG PLAYS.
2. The depth at offensive line
3. The fire Gill Thread showing up again WAY TO SOON!

the postman,
I am really not trying to be arrogant or mean, but please explain why the fire Gill thread should show up after losing to the second best team in FCS????

It's not about the results. It's about how the results happen.

I'm not trying to be arrogant either but have read what I have actually said tonight? It's not that we lost it is we were embarrassed!! We didn't look even close to prepared tonight and that had been a common theme in the Turner Gill Era.
Keep sipping the Kool Aid.

Well stated I have said it before and I will say it again this coaching staff in which Gill is the head coach gets out coached and I don't care how you spin it that's on him

Sat at the game with my head in my hands! Worse play calling I've seen in a while. Reminded me of Offensive play calling at GW last year. O line was miserable. Calvert had little to no protection. After three games, there should be some reflection of organization and rythm. It was not there......really NOT there. Missed tackles, missed tackles, missed tackles! IMHO a great majority of it was fundamental football mistakes.....and THAT is scary at this level.

Totally agree, I set in the stands tonight and seen an O-line that could not move anybody and couldn't protect the passer. We were not prepared in the least to play this game. For all you in the flames nation that think Gill is the man to lead this team to the promise land please give us some of what your drinking so we can be delusional as well. It ain't happening not as long as he is the coach. He is a good man with great character just not a good HC. Please check out his overall record it speaks for itself

Good:
Hickson at RB
Calvert
No bad penalties
Bad:
Playcalling. Too many runs up middle.
Pass routes.
Defense. Left receivers uncovered.

The Good:
1) The game is over
2) I didn't see it
3) The result has no bearing on our success this season
The Bad:
1) This stupid game limits you to three bad things
2) We have a new generation of LU fans who know the result of a litmus test game before it begins
3) Offensive problems, defensive big play tendencies, basic special teams execution problems haven't been fixed yet

This says the rules are simple but I think I found a loophole...
The Good:
1. Jacksonville State. Well coached, great in the trenches, they take risks.
2. Roc Thomas. This kid is an absolute monster. He's going to be a handful for everyone in playoffs.
3. Eli Jenkins. Between him and Thomas, that's the best 1-2 punch in FCS. It seemed like they ran several run/pass options. How do you defend it? If you keep seven in the box and use one as a spy, Jenkins will beat you with his arm. If you keep 4 back and blitz, he'll beat you with his legs. He's smart, composed and delivers a really nice deep ball.
The Bad:
1. Our offense. Blame Gill if you want. But there are few offenses less creative than we are.
2. Steven Calvert. Yeah, he was better than Masha...but that's not saying anything. Besides two decent plays, he looked abysmal. The kid does have a heck of an arm, but can someone tell him to add some touch to his throws? Rifling everything doesn't work.
3. Defense. This is exactly what I feared...our defense gets burned on big plays. The JSU gameplan was simple. Defensively, keep everything in front. Offensively, they took real risks and went downfield. It paid off and we couldn't keep up.

We ran ball up middle far too many times. I saw during first possession of game that JSU was too big on d line to run ball up middle. Combine that with our pass routes down the sideline it made for a tough night to establish any offense.
At running back our 3rd best RB is the starter. Hickson and Mosley are better than Macon

Maybe you're ignoring those losses to GW and Monmouth.

Exactly, and a road loss to KSU will gets us back to the same discussion. This will be, in Donald Trump's vernacular, a HUGE game

Please don't derail the threads. Some people get pissy about that. Ha

The Good (gulp):
1. Frankie Hickson
2. Juwan Wells/JaRon Greene
3. We play RMU this week
The Bad:
1. Offensive play calling is atrocious
2. Arm tackling/allowing big plays
3. The crowd was atrocious
Bonus: Worst loss in a decade
It's not the fact we lost to the #3 team in the country. It's the fact we looked beyond awful doing it. We are abysmal right now and I never thought I would see the day Liberty football was this bad. The wheels have officially come off. I predicted a loss, but I did not see a 30 point shellacking coming our way like this.
