I know it was last week but ETSU beating Kennesaw was certainly a shock for me.

Campbell was a 5 point favorite. Good win for the Blue Hose on the Road.

Big South Match up of the year, that doesn't involve Liberty , is this weekend. Monmouth vs CSU.

CSU coming off 2 Bye weeks essentially, with a ton of their players sitting against FSU two weeks ago, and the official bye last week. Monmouth coming off a disappointing showing at FBS Kent State. If Monmouth can bounce back in this one and pull off a surprise victory, it would really increase our chances at the auto bid.

Do they still have to sit a bunch of starters?

After surfing through that mess of a thread about the CSU suspensions, I found this.

Apparently 16 of the 32 suspended players sat out last week (Kentucky State) with 14 more today at FSU and 2 will take their suspension "at a later date."

Monmouth has impressed and KSU seems to have figured things out since their opening loss. It will take us everything we have to beat KSU on the road. Thankfully it isn't a 12PM-3PM kickoff. We are historically bad in away games before 4PM.

That's an interesting concept. I hadn't thought of it before. Here are our away results in games starting before 4PM:

2012
2-2

2013
2-0

2014
3-1

2015
1-3

2016
0-1

Overall that's 8-7 in those games.

To contrast, here are our results in away games after 4PM:

2012
0-1

2013
0-3

2014
2-2

2015
0-1

2016
0-2

That's 2-9 in away games after 4PM.

Overall, we're 10-16 on the road under Gill.

I think we could change your original statement to "we are historically bad in away games."

The good news is CSU and Monmouth are at home. That KSU game may be a tough one though.

I'm hoping we can break a bit of a trend down at KSU...we have lost our last three first time road games against Big South opponents

Jon, good research on the away games and I agree we have been bad in general. However, I was going back to when Rocco was coach too, not just under HCTG. So let's go with the last 10 seasons.

06 - at CCU - 28-26L - 12:30PM Kickoff - Didn't have playoff implications, but it's a loss to a rival.
07 - at Elon - 42-14L - 1:30 Kickoff - They were the better team, but we got smoked.
08 - at Presby - 31-28L - 1:30 Kickoff - Playoffs ruined. Potentially worst loss in program history.
09 - at SB - 36-33L - 1PM Kickoff - Playoffs on the line, ruined again.
10 - at RMU - 30-23L - 12PM Kickoff - Playoffs ruined at-large hopes
10 - at CCU - 45-31L - 1PM Kickoff - Solidified playoffs ruined.
11 - at Lehigh - 27-24L - 12:30PM Kickoff - Playoffs ruined at-large hopes
11 - at SB - 41-31L - 3:30PM Kickoff - Solidified playoffs ruined.
12 - at Montana - 34-14L - 3:30PM Kickoff - We got smoked by the better team.
12 - at CCU - 36-12L - 3:30PM Kickoff - Playoffs ruined.
14 - at Ind St - 38-19L - 3PM Kickoff - Could have ruined at-large hopes. Bad loss.
15 - at MON - 20-17L - 1PM Kickoff - Playoffs ruined.
15 - at CSU - 31-24L - 2PM Kickoff - Solidified playoffs ruined.

We are particularly bad when we have to fly to an early afternoon game. I'm not sure why, rest is the obvious go-to factor, but I don't feel good about playing on the road in early afternoon games.

The only FCS away game before 4PM this year is against Presby and it's a 2PM Kickoff. Thankfully KSU is a 7PM Kickoff. I think it genuinely makes a difference.

We are 2-4 in FCS away games starting after 4PM under Gill.

I think your theory may be out the window because we're simply not good on the road regardless of start time.

The thing that concerns me is the stat nugget I posted above...we have lost our last three first time road games against new (at the time) Big South members, while we have beaten those same teams in home games the year before by at least 10 points

Presbyterian
2007 H W 48-14
2008 A L 31-28

Stony Brook
2008 H W 33-0
2009 A L 36-33

Monmouth
2014 H W 34-24
2015 A L 20-17 (OT)

Or, my theory is based on games where we are the heavy favorites or have the playoffs on the line.

Although I appreciate your research, it is skewed. You were factoring in FBS games and there are significantly more games after 4PM than before 4PM, which means there is more room for error in those evening games. I don't disagree that we are awful on the road. It just seems that early afternoon games are the ones that end up holding the most weight and have killed us the most in the past.

That is an interesting stat, Beej.

Road records under Gill vs FCS opponents:

Before 4PM: 6-5
After 4PM: 2-4

We're actually better before 4PM than we are after 4PM under Coach Gill. There are also significantly more road day games than road night games.

For comparison, here are the road records under Rocco vs FCS opponents:

Before 4PM: 9-8
After 4PM: 7-4

Your theory holds up for the Rocco era, but it's completely wrong for the Gill era.

We'll take this one step further because I don't feel like working right now.

Road Big South records under Rocco:

Before 4PM: 9-5
After 4PM: 2-0

Road Big South games under Gill:

Before 4PM: 6-3
After 4PM: 0-1
Kennesaw State and the OWLS 1/2/26
