That time of the year where BJ starts a game thread and then he will ask other people to do the work he doesn't want to do.

Ahhhhh football season.

Valid point. He could probably do a better job then my current boss. So he has got that going for him.

I am psyched to have a game to have some games upon which to fixate over the next few days. It seems hard to believe we are finally close to real action.

BJ - If you want to take the mantle and all of the work of hosting these threads, run with it. Just don't stop, drop and roll a new thread. Bring it.

Virginia Tech is running with Jarod Evans as QB with Motley and freshman Josh Jackson may or may not rotate some with him. Any of the three could pose problems for our defense with their ability to run with the football.

WR Isiah Ford and TE Bucky Hodges are going to be a handful.

I mentioned this in the prediction thread but I'm assuming Fuente's going to want to put his stamp on the Hokies from the get-go and really put an exclamation point on this game. I could also see a scenario where Masha gets pulled (injury and/or game being out of reach) and Calvert comes in and has some success in the fourth quarter. QB controversy early in the season?

A smart coach doesn't create a QB controversy. Unless Masha gets injured and can't return, let him play and learn.

A smart coach plays his best QB, there is no controversy. Unless Masha gets injured and can't return, there will be no controversy.

I am not a fan of leaving the starting QB in the entire game if there is not a win or loss in the balance If it's a blowout either way in the 4th, I say pull him and give the backup some snaps Not to create a controversy, but to avoid the risk of injury to your starter and give the backup some game experiences If the backup plays well and some crazy fans like us want to make a controversy of it, so what As long as the coach and the team have confidence in the starter, that's all that matters

I wasn't arguing against the point of a blow out. If we're down 4 TDs to start the 4th, pull Masha and put Calvert in there. No point in risking an injury. But that would not create a QB controversy, even if Calvert were to throw a couple TDs.

I'm all for avoiding injuries but it doesn't matter how much confidence you state you have in your starter. When you pull a QB, who hasn't proven himself, he's going to assume the worst.

There's no sense in naming a starting QB, if you aren't going to let him lead an entire game. Great programs seek stability.

That' last statement is just dumb He's called the starting QB, and that means he's your best and he starts the game You don't call him the "play every snap even if the game is over" QB We had that last year and IMHO it was not particularly stabilizing

Stop comparing last year to this year.

Woodrum was a three year starter...he wasn't getting replaced...he had nothing to worry about. I'm fine with sitting a senior QB if the game is put away to avoid injury. We aren't talking about that.

Tomorrow is the first game of the season. Masha hasn't seen much playing time. Bud Foster is one of the smartest defensive coordinators in the entire country. Even if VT keeps their defense vanilla for most of the game, Masha may not get that kind of experience for the rest of his career. Milk that puppy as long as you can.

If he throws three picks and we're down 31-0, pulling him from the game won't help his confidence. And then if Calvert steps in, while VT switches to an even more vanilla defense, and he has a big game...Masha's confidence is shot.

It's one thing to sit a senior QB when you're up by 30 and everyone is happy. It's another thing to sit a new QB when you're down by 30 and everyone is frustrated.

QB's get pulled in the 4th quarter of blow outs all the time. If it happens and it certainly should not shake Masha's confidence

That's a whole lot of manufactured drama there

Pulling your starting QB late in the game when it is over is smart football, and if anything sends the message that he is too valuable to risk any longer in a lost cause If his confidence is so fragile he doesn't understand that, then he is probably not the leader you want anyway

I love ya brother, but there are way too many variables taking place here. I see your point, but disagree of any controversy, if we're down 30 and he throws his 4th INT and is replaced in the 3rd Qtr. I don't see your point if he hasn't played poorly and is pulled in the 4th Qtr because they're down 30. Very different scenarios.

The only way there is a controversy is if this is still being talked about heading into the Robert Morris game. If we are 1-3 or 0-4 heading to RMU, and Masha has been awful, then there should be controversy. Again, way too many ifs. Masha is too good to get benched for a true Frosh, so it won't happen. Again, Calvert plays if Masha's injured. He sits of Masha isn't.

If we are 0-4, Masha will be benched regardless of his play. It may not be fair, but they'll be in save their job mode at that point. Masha will go to RB or WR with Calvert at QB.
