New Additions to the Roster

I don't know if Manson and the boys at LFN covered this but we added (officially) a few more new faces to the roster as invited (or preferred whichever is the correct term here) walk-ons, including one guy we knew about already, a local kid to the LU program, and a kicker from my neck of the woods (which means the battle will be rejoined come training camp):

The odds that any of these guys will make a significant contribution are slim at best. Yes, it happens, but not often.

Don't forget olldflame, our all-conference punter started out as a preferred walk-on and as of the moment our only other kicker is a true freshman.

I recall a Walk On 185 pound tight end at Virginia Tech who became an All American Defensive End.

Being able to cite a couple of the rare exceptions doesn't change the fact that walkons very rarely play a significant role. I would say the kicker has the best chance. If he is sólid on the short ones and Probert is not, you might see the duties split, with Probert doing kickoffs and long FGs.

My point in mentioning them is that for the vast majority that never are more than roster fillers, you'll get a few (preferred or not) who will end up making a pretty decent name for themselves

Another example- Current assistant coach Bryant Lewellyn started as a walk-on, made the team, ended up finishing as an all-conference defensive lineman. Niko Davis I believe started as a walk-on as well. Im sure if you went through the historic rosters you could find a few other names of players who didn't start out as scholarship guys

I look for Conner Maitland to make the squad. He's got the size, motor, speed, tackling, blocking skills to make valuable contributions to the special teams. Plus he has the character you want on the team.
