Looking Ahead to 2016 Part 3: WR

After a long break for the holidays we are back with a look at the boys who will be catching passes from whoever the QB will be for LU in 2016:

Players Lost
Dakota Kelly
Darrin Peterson
Malaki Roy

Players Returning
Isaac Brown
Kyle Carrington
Denvre Daniels
BJ Farrow
Marquis Fitzgerald
Damian King
Ryan McCarter
Zac Parker
Cephas Reddick
Dante Shells
Josh Tully

The Flames do not lose much in terms of numbers from the WR corps in 2016, but they lost probably the best WR in Flames history with the graduation of Darrin Peterson. Petey was a threat in both the short and deep passing game and could make plays on passes that some of us can only make playing Madden on our favorite game system.

It will be up to BJ Farrow and Dante Shells to lead the way for this bunch in 2016 with Farrow's classmates Damian King and Denvre Daniels adding speed to the unit. Others to watch will include McCarter who battled injuries in the first half of his career in a Flames uniform and hopefully can close out his career with a healthy season and contributing in the way fans expected him to when he was signed. Zac Parker has had a star crossed career, and been much maligned in the return game as well (more on that in a future thread), but he has a chance to finish with a flourish as well. Brown, Carrington, Fitzgerald, Reddick and Tully will probably be mostly scout team players but could see action in the receiver rotation with ony one wideout (confirmed) coming in the 2016 class.

Did I miss something? What happened to Kelly?

Marquis Fitzgerald is not a scout team player. Coach Brown is very high on him. Thinks he has as much raw athletic talent as anyone we have. I believe with another year of development he will be a contributor next year.

Graduated early. Considering he was paying his own way, I can't fault him with leaving a year of eligibility on the table. He would have been no better than our 3rd or 4th slot receiver anyway.

Thanks.

We've got plenty of talent in this group, just need Farrow to emerge as a true, dominant #1. If we can get a run game going, this group is perfect for a lot of vertical, play action throws. Hopefully Dailey is ready to cut out the repetitive WR screens for loss of 3-yards.

This will be an interesting group to watch assuming that both AGG and Harvey put pen to our letter on signing day. You have to think that if Daniels gets some looks in the backfield (we do have quite a few RBs on the board so stay tuned on that one), we could be looking at 6 guys gunning for 1-2 spots on the 2 deep if either of the two commits signs and impresses in training camp, and maybe 3 more spots beyond that in the group that makes it on the field (and barring injury usually will be in in garbage time).
