I don't have confirmation, but it appears this is a legacy. Donald Smith was a beast of a DB for the Flames back when some of us were in school before he spent a decade playing professionally primarily in Canada in addition to a short stint with the Cowboys.

Yeah, the elder Donald Smith was an assistant coach for us for awhile. He now is coaching and teaching down in Danville in addition to apparently being quite an artist:

Donald Smith’s secret might be out. He’s a teacher during the day at Gibson Elementary School and a football and wrestling coach at George Washington High School after school hours. But when school’s out, he’s an artist, an avocation he said not many of his fellow teachers know about.

In addition to playing corner, The elder Donald may have been the best overall special teams player we ever had, both returning kicks and blocking them. Might want to consider bringing him back on staff to help correct a big problem area.
