PC Postmortem

An ugly win is still a win.
As ugly as it was to watch, it kept our scant playoff hopes alive. If we somehow found a way to win against CSU & Coastal, the 7 DI wins would probably be enough to secure an at-large bid. But that will be exceptionally tough to accomplish the way we have played this past month.

At the risk of sounding overly positive, might I point out that CSU and Coastal´s wins over Presby were equally ugly, Maybe uglier. CSU won 10-7 and Coastal 24-17, with Presby threatening inside the 10 at the end of the Coastal game. Their W-L record is awful, but they have definately been a ¨tough out¨ against the supposed elite of the BSC. Winning out is still very possible, and if we can get our act together and actually look good in winning these last 2, the ¨style points¨just might get us an at large.

We're still part of the "elite" of the conference this year?

A win is a win this time of year. They did not give up.

What makes a game a "good game." Certainly a win is a start. The offense really struggled tonight. The defense didn't look much better, but saved the game in the end.
It was a cold, wet start, but dried off for the second half. I had fun. I am glad the student section showed up. Attendance was less than 15,000, but the student side was LOUD for much of the game. Not so much of the 3Q, but they stepped it up towards the end. That would never have happened when I was an undergrad. I am glad to see it.

If I'm not mistaken the opposition is 17 for 17 in the red zone in the last few games. We are converting @ 60% in the red zone this year . . . another blocked field goal.

We were fortunate that they dropped the ball in the end zone and their QB went out of bounds on the 8 instead of being credited for a 30 TD run. Nonetheless I'll take the win.

We did not come to play, especially on offense. We got to get running game going. Too many plays for 3yards or less. Looked a little better in 4th qtr. Playing a 1-7 team, game should be decided by halftime.

During the postgame TG said that Wimberly , "called a good game". What a joke. If ir werent for a TD being called back, we would have lost 17 to 7 at home against a 1-8 team, and this is "calling a good game"? Also, he talked about trying to put in a few more effective running plays. Because when your starting rb is out, and offensive line is thin... I guess what you need is a few more running plays so there isnt as much pressure on your 5rh year qb? It makes no sense to me.
But I'm glad we pulled it out.

I don't think we are "elite" this year, but in order to win the Big South pretty much since 2009, the champ has to go through Liberty, like CSU will have to do next week (and apparently some want to give that game to CSU already without actually saying it)

CSU doesn't have to go through us for the title, Beej. They've already got it.

They have the autobid Jon...they don't have the title outright just yet.

I'll try not to be totally negative. The resolve to hang in there and beat a bad team was there. I wasn't sure it would be. Damian king and bj farrow are going to be a fun duo to watch. Special teams is just flat out awful. That's atleast the 5th or 6th punt and kick that has been blocked. Special teams have been horrible under Gill going back to year one when he fired himself from special teams coordinator. Someone has to be brought in from the outside. Our special teams play is an embarrassment to organized football. Very unimpressed with the play calling again tonight on offense and once presby took to the option game we couldn't stop them gain. Those comments by gill are puzzling and really doesn't make me feel like he holds his coaches accountable. Anyway I still think we get in if we win out but it won't matter unles's we do work next week.

The only team with whom they could share the title is Coastal Carolina, and they (Coastal) would have to beat Kennesaw State and us, and we would have to beat CSU, for Coastal to claim a share of the title. CSU has no other Big South games after us, so the worst they can do in the conference is one loss.

I think at the very least, at the end of the season JB needs to have a discussion with Gill about bringing in an outside Special Teams Coach. No one would have to be fired...I believe our current Special Teams coach is also the RB coach. We need a separate special teams coach with experience to solidify a terribly weak area.
I guess I'm in a bad mood. But I am happy LU won. They managed to make that last drive count, and then the defense held. Often we haven't pulled games like this out...basically winning one where we were outplayed for over half of the game.

That is all true, but we still will have something to say. If we beat them, the Bucs will be fans of ours if they want the title for themselves when we play Coastal

Play calling wasn't bad execution and tackling were. No more excuses of young guys, not 9 gms into the season. Just hv to tackle and realize that ALL teams with mobile qbs hv given us fits this year.
Offense is in no rythem at all. The rb situation won't be fixed until next year when the seniors are off the roster. Is it the line or the rb. It's def something. The starting back wasn't out to my knowledge as gill said because the staff benched DJ for Dez at beginning of year. Macon has waited patiently and simply performed when his number is called. I would start him next week over num 26.
Wonder how the qb grades his performance, bottom line is tho that team got the W and they fight onto next week

We probably lead the nation in FGs being blocked. Except for 1 return, our punt return team is non-existent. Kickoff return team is lacking also.

I did some checking on the coaching staffs of a few top FCS programs to see if anyone had a dedicated special teams coach. Nope. Moglia at Coastal not surprisingly has an innovative approach. He breaks the different aspects of special teams down and divides the duties between 5 assistants-

I think it´s a great idea, but doubt we would do it just because it would be ¨copying¨Coastal. If I were a betting man, my money would be on Gill turning it over next year to the man he trusts most. That would be Ron Brown.
